it was an injured Mourning dove fledgeling. im taking care of it now and its doing great. i have a lot of experience with birds and really want to release him into the wild myself. or keep him depending on how he heals. so one day i was wondering if i need a licence in NJ? i dont want to get in trouble with the law.

Let him go in your backyard. He will always hand around for food and no-one is going to care if you have the proper license or not.

No the dove is a native bird.

Since you hand raised it it must have imprinted on you.

I would keep it as a pet If I hand reared it

I would ask your local department of wildlife. Wild bird rehab centers can tell you what age is best to release it too.
