Your dog is so lucky that you want to feed him the very best.
I have been breeding purebred dogs for the past 38 years. Two years ago, I began feeding Canidae. I have tried all the major premium brands of kibble, but since feeding Canidae, I would never want to feed anything else. My old dogs became younger, my pups grew better than ever, and the in between are robust with good health. My dog's teeth don't need cleaned, and they have Sweet breath.
Other great kibbles are Innova, Wysong, Solid Gold, Wellness.

Hi!
I have used Pedigrees for Lady--both the dry and the canned. The way I decided on Pedigrees was simple if you think of it. I simply read the ingredients. You will be surprised when you read those ingredients of some of the dog foods or maybe you know already. What I learned from reading is that you should not even consider buying a dog food if it does not contain real meat and that should be listed as the third ingredient. The further down the list beef by products is, the better, because beef byproducts consist of what is left over after the cow is slaughtered and the meat is cut for human comsumption--need I say more?

A dog needs some canned food as well as dry food. This is because many millions of years ago, dogs were hunters. This was how they got to eat. Now their food is given to them and most dogs hunt just for fun.

When you consider these three dog foods and decide on one, you must not switch your dog's food too quickly. Doing so can cause him/her to have dirreahea. When you change your dog's food, add only a small bit of the new food. Then in a few days add more of the new food. At the same time you are adding the new food, you will be decreasing the old food by say 1/2 cup or so if you add 1/2 cup of the new food, when you put the old food in the bowl, put in 1/2 cup less. Continue this until the food is completely changed over. If at any time your dog develops dirreahea, go back to his original food and start over again. If you move along slowly this should not happen. However, if it does, it will be only a day or two before you can begin again with the new food and when you do, start at 1/2 cup again and continue for at least 2 days and see how your dog does. If he does, O.K. do as you were doing before with adding new food and decreasing the amount of old (or original) food.

I know that I have not answered your question. The best way to know what is the best food for your dog is first to consider ingredients, then age of dog, activity level of dog, and then price last. Also you should consider if you want to feed only dry or dry and canned or canned exclusively. Also, DO NOT at any time give your doggie people food. This is mistake many people make. We think that we are being good to dogs when we give them our people food, but we're really not. People food sometimes has too much fat in it for dogs and people eat things that dogs should not have such as onions. Also, never, never feed your dog chocolate. It has a deadly poison in it for doggies, but the same thing won't hurt us.

I would not ask your vet for nutritional advice, they know little about nutrition.

I feed Sensible Choice (Royal Canin) and have been happy with it. Natural balance (Dick Van Patten) is an even better choice, it just isn't high enough protein/fat for my running Hounds, but good for most breeds. Canidae, Wellness, and Innova are very good foods, just to expensive for me to feed to my crew!

I would never feed my dogs Science Diet, Iams, Pedigree, or Eukanuba. SD and Euk is a fairly high priced yet crappy food, if only they spent more on the actual food and less on advertising.

There are some very good articles online about pet nutrition, just don't bother with any written by the companies. Go to the feed store and analyze and understand the labels. The cheap foods are crappy, but not all of the more expensive ones are good!

the ads on the TV and net may be misleading, but I have always found Purina One to be the best of the bunch. The majority of the foods start with REAL meat, not byproducts (the heart, lungs and other useless material), or meal (the legs/hooves/beaks and ect.) Purina one also contains all the nutrients that your dogs needs, you may see him eat less, because he needs less. This food is filling and tastey. You will see the difference as I saw with my dog in the coat and energy of the dog. As for canned food, you might want to stay away from that as it builds up tartar. Unless you brush your dog's teeth regularly, an all wet food diet should be shunned. Twice a weak is fine though. As my suggestion for dog food, check the moisture content (%), as you don't want to waste all your money on water. Hope this helps.

My dog started out on Nutro Natural. The vet recommended I start feeding him Science Diet. I did and his coat became noticelably healthier within a week, and he pooped less. It's more expensive than other brands, but worth it in the long run.

Pretty much the best food you can give a dog is sheep stomach. That's all I feed my two Bernese Mountain Dogs, and they are as healthy as can be. The vet recommended the sheep stomach and I started buying it about four years ago and the dogs have never been better. Their coats are nicer, they need less grooming. Their breath doesn't stink anymore, their more active but well behaved, and best of all, they sleep better! It's the best decision I've made regarding these dogs.

I realize that there really is a big difference in dog food, but check this out. I have had pets who are healthy as can be at 13 years old in human years, and just by eating scraps, off brand food and stuff. I think personally that it don't matter, but there will be alot of people who argue. To each his own.

Or what. Read the ingredients list. If you find corn/corn products, wheat/wheat products it is a poor quality food. Those ingredients are fillers that can trigger skin problems. By products are another no no, that can include cancerous tissue.
The best brands include: California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick.

our kennel uses natural balance but there are actually alot of good foods out there. Alot of it depends on the dog itself. For instance, Natural Balance(or nutro.. I forget which) sells a potato and duck kibble that is hypoallergenic for dogs with food allergies.

This is also something good to bring up with your vet. Alot of dog foods contain foods that dogs can have allergies too or that have undigestable products in them like corn. Your vet should be able to give you suggestions on a food that would be best for your dog's specific needs.
