I got some of my dogs from the humane society, but most from breeders. Careful of the ones from the pet store though because some aren't taken care of properly. Research the store and ask a lot of questions before you make a decision. Breeders usually advertise in the newspaper so take a look in there.

I dont believe that animal shelter garbage. If you want to find a purebred dog, look in the paper. Then, arrange to see the dogs. You want to look for a breeder that keeps his or her dogs in the house like family, but they might have the puppies outside. The people that I bought all of my boxers from, treated their dog this way. I have never purchased a dog like that, but these turned out to be the best dogs I have ever had, and Ive owned alot of dogs over the years. I purchased a rottweiler once from a dog shop or mill as PETA likes to call it and he turned out great, with no health problems as they insured. I have picked up an airedale from a breeder and this dog was NUTS. He was left out in a barn pretty much by himself, and wasnt socialized. I had to give him away to a professional to take care of him. Something was seriously wrong with that dog. Finally, I have had one dog from the shelter, and my best friend got 2. All three of these dogs were screwy. The dog I picked up attacked anything and everything, and was extremely aggressive. His dogs are just NUTS. My advice to you, before listening to all the SHELTER PEOPLE is this: there is a reason those dogs are there. That sounds horrible, but its true.

I got my Collie cross, Jasmine, from a girl who was going away to college and her parents told her to find a home for the dog. My Shepherd cross, Gypsy, was an abandoned 5-month-old puppy that was wandering down the road half-starved and so mangy she was missing most of her hair. She was so weak she could hardly walk when my son found her and brought her home. He thought she was an old dog that was dying and he intended to have her euthanized for humaness, but when the vet said she was only 5 months old, we decided to keep her and nurse her back to health.
My previous dogs (now deceased) were: Grett, a Sheepdog/border collie cross, whom I got for a dollar at a flea market as a puppy; Pooh, a toy poodle that my neighbor saw being dumped on the road and rescued, and Shunka, whom I got at an animal shelter. All these turned out to be GREAT dogs.
There are so many homeless dogs out there, just waiting for someone to love them, it does not make sense to pay hundreds of dollars to a breeder or (heaven forbid!) a puppy mill. Unless you are plannig to show the dog or you need a specific breed for a specific purpose, a crossbreed is just fine as a pet. And frankly, since the purebreds are often so inbred, I think a mongrel is smarter, combining the best of all the breeds in its genetics.

The best place to get a dog from is a trusted breeder. Make sure you can check the pup out before you buy it because you want to make sure its healthy and lively and doesn't seem to have any problems. You should also have an agreement with the breeder that you can have it checked by a vet before you take it for sure. You don't want to get it home and realize it has very bad knees and then you can't get your money back form the breeder. Knees can cost upwards of 800$ per knee to fix and causes the dog alot of pain.
Getting a dog from your friend is ok, just make sure you aren't taking on any medical problems that are going to cost you a fortune.
Pet shops aren't too bad. Many pet stores get their dogs from respectable breeders and have them well checked before they are able to be bought. But ask first. Tell them you want to know what kind of breeders they get the pups from and what kind of guarantee they have on the dogs, because again, at pet store prices, you don't want to end up with huge medical bills on top.
Newpapers are questionable. You might get lucky and get a good dog, but you are just as likely to end up with puppy mill dogs, which is the same reason I wouldn't buy dogs from roadside car sales.. you can't see how the dogs were living at home.
Although pounds may seem to be the best choice as far as getting a dog, keep in mind that many pounds are crawling with disease. I once bought a dog from the pound only to find it had distemper. They had the vet check it before it when home with me, but the vet neglected to tell me this. When I had to have the dog put to sleep, they pound offered me another dog, but I was told then by the vet that the whole pound was having a distemper epidemic, so check out allt he dogs and see that they look lively and healthy, and have it checked out by a trusted vet before you get too attached.
I god MY dogs from a breeder for free because they had health problems. My first dog had a heart murmer which I spent 3000$ having fixed and my second had a bad case of kennel cough which was easy to get fixed.
Just know what you are getting into before you get into it. This goes for getting a dog anywhere.

I've been checking out the aspca for a dog that will be right for my family. Thats my first choice. I would really like to have a german shepard, and may eventually resort going to a breeder if I cant find one in a shelter.

Get the from an animal shelter. They really need a home. Besides, most dogs that come from breeders have diseases and need lots of medical attention.

Got my dog from a breeder who advertised in the paper. But....my friend just adopted a dog from the animal shelter and it's the best dog you could have ever asked for. It's gentle, loving, and one of the best dogs I have ever seen!

a breeder, but the best place is probably an animal shelter, b/c the dogs there have nearly no hope of surviving
