My Westies are scratching like crazy! I bathed them in sensitive skin shampoo, and even hydrocortisone shampoo and they can seem to get no relief. Any ideas?

My vet said to cut their hair and give them benadryl and see it that helps first. I did, but how long b4 I see results?

Use a shampoo that does not contain soap, rub them down once a week with baby oil(unscented), let it set for an hour then wash it off.

First go to a vet. Then look at what you are feeding them. Does the ingredients list have corn/corn products? wheat/wheat products? They both trigger skin problems. Also does it contain by products? Even though that doesn't cause itching like the other two ingredients it can contain cancerous tissue. Good quality foods contain none of these things. A few of the best brands out there include: California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick.

Take the dogs to a vet. There might actually be a problem that needs to be checked out. Hopefully its nothing though and they can give you some good tips on stopping the itching.
My pom puppies itched because of the heat. I had then shaved and they are great now xD

make sure the dogs are nice ad cool because in weather like this they get heat bump like humans do, the only problems with dogs is that they scratch and scratch until it becomes infected and a yellowy puss comes out and they bleed , if this occures buy some non-fragarnce babywipes and clean the wound with that as much as you can it works just as god as the stuff from the vets but a quarter of the price good luck

It might be allergies if it is environmental you can have them tested if it happens to be food the only real way you will be able to find out is to do food trials with the dogs. I own a 6 and a half year old French Bulldog who has severe food allergies she is on a hypoallergenic diet. The blood test for testing for environmental allergens is quite pricey ranging from a minimum of $300.00 and higher but it is worth. You want to find a board certified in veterinary dermatology Veterinarian.

My dog itches and the shampoo didnt help. We went to the vets and we got a special shampoo, but got told it could be an allergy - common ones are pollen (which you cant avoid but is more prominent in the hayfever season) and also housemites (EVERY house has these and they cannot be stopped they are harmless to humans but some pets are alergic to them).

Maybe allergies. Anything from food to grass can cause it. Have you changed your dog food lately? Any new plants outside? Or some plant/grass that was dormant during the winter now growing?
Check with your vet. Often they will give you predisone to help with the scratching.

I have the problem with my mini fox terrier. I went to PetSmart and found some flea shampoo that actually has oatmeal in it. This seemed to do the trick. If you want, contact me and I'll get the name of the shampoo for you.

I hope you read this!
My dog had the same problem and when I took him to the vet he diagnosed him with Sarcoptic Mange.
TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET AS SOON AS YOU CAN! Mange can get so bad and the infections from them scratching that he can die!
