Female dogs can have their first heat cycle at the age of six months and some will wait until one year of age, it is not advised to breed until the female is at least two years of age due to maturity of their bones and internal organs and the ability for them to handle a pregnancy. aFemale dog will go into heat about every six months afterwords.

Dogs should be neutered from 5 months of age. They usually come into heat from 6 months of age, depending on the breed. It is very important to spay a female dog before her first heat, so get her booked in ASAP if she is older than 5 months. If you get this done before her first heat she will have a 75% chance of NOT getting mammary cancer in the future - once she has had a heat this is reduced to 50%, and the to about 25% from the second heat onwards. And if that's not reason enough...! Spaying also prevents pyometra and uterine cancer. Chalice

I have an English Cocker Spaniel and she will be 9 months the 5th of July and she is on her first "heat" cycle right now. It really does depend on the size and breed of the dog. Pay close attention. When your dog starts to really licking constantly 'down there' you will know.

Most are 6 months, but larger dog might take a little longer, then every 6 months, make sure you take her to the vet if you plan to breed her, she could have problems that could cause serious problems during pregnancy and delivery, especially if she is a small breed, alot of small breeds can't deliver on their own, they need c-sections, I hope this helped! Good Luck

Sexual maturity tens to occur earlier in small dogs and later in large dogs. Bitches have their first estrus (also known as season or heat) after six months of age, although it can occur as late as 18 months.
