My husband and I are considering moving there and want to buy a house/condo for about $350K. We'd probably be working downtown area and hope to drive to work, but the subway is acceptable if traffic/parking is difficult.

We've been looking on realor.com and found some places in Congress Heights, Deanwood, Anacostia... but do not know anything about crime, proximity to city and subway, cost of housing, etc.

We're looking for a nice, safe neighbor which isn't too far from the city. (Maybe 30 min commute?) Close to conveniences but also not concrete city.

Thanks!

We live in that area, and the places you mentioned have VERY high crime rates.

Try Alexandria, Virginia. It is just over the bridge(s) to DC, and only about a 30-40 minute commute. It is also much safer and less expensive than actually living in DC.

I work in Alexandria, but my husband works in DC. We have a townhouse in the Mount Vernon area, and it would be about $450,000 but there are some great condos in the BelleView or BelleHaven areas, which are really nice. The Huntington area is also great, and very close to a Metro station.

Arlington, Virginia is nice too. Crystal City is part of Arlington, but I think it is expensive. REALLY got a lot to do, though.

Best of luck! This is a great place to live!!

I'm from the DC suburbs (Maryland)so I have a rough idea of how it is in DC. Montgomery County, MD (where I live) and Fairfax Co. VA are really nice but allow at least an hour to commute to DC.

As for DC, I know Columbia Heights is an up and coming area with house prices increasing the highest due to the neighborhood's gentrification. Those neighborhoods you mentioned are kinda shady, especially Anacostia. The NE and SE parts of DC are generally crime ridden with drug dealing and stuff.

Silver Spring, MD or Arlington, VA. Some parts of DC aren't safe. If you want a nice neighborhood and good schools, try the MD suburbs or Northern VA. The best prices for homes are in Prince Georges County, MD. Contact prigalbrothers@hotmail.com for more info. This is an excellent real estate firm.
