Tuesday night/Wednesday morning I was driving home on a 2 lane road when I came upon an intersection, I had a green light and proceeded down the road. As I was coming through the intersection, I see another car going over 70 MPH from the other direction and saw that she was not going to stop at her red light. I slammed on the brakes, but we still hit and my car is totalled. I am okay - just some minor scrapes from the air bag.

I have been in 2 wrecks before (where I was driving) and a couple of arguable worse ones but this is the first one that wasn't my fault. What scares me is that I was just driving down the road and out of no where - I get into a huge wreck. The others didn't scare me as bad since they were my fault and I knew I could have prevented them. It scares me that I can just be driving down the road not doing anything wrong and this happened. Like I said, I've been in worse but this one has really shaken me up.

Any advice on how to get over this?

I have been in a similar wreck and now let me tell you, I check pretty much all interstections when I am going through them... I am that jerk that slows down for all of them. Getting behind the wheel is hard but do it right away and shake the fear off. It will get better I promise. The longer you wait to drive again the more afraid you become.

Yes. Buy a suburban for city traffic, it's a fairly massive 'idiot deflector', size DOES matter in traffic, people are less-inclined to try and ram into something that looks like it might kill them, paint the thing BRIGHT SAFETY ORANGE, and if you get one that's all ratted-out-looking, like you don't have insurance, that's a double bonus, because the accident fraud people will leave you alone, too.Carry insurance though, so you don't get a ticket, but leave that full coverage to somebody else. Make sure you're covered in the event of a wreck, and that you're a little above the legal minimums, but that's more than plenty, right there. Nothing breeds respect on the road like some good fender corrosion, and some dents...hehehe

If you're messed up in the head about the accident, go to wherever they have bumper cars and spend 30 bucks...get it out of your system...take a defensive driving class, too. The life you save may be your own...

I respond to motor vehicle accidents all the time. The best thing for you to do is get back behind the wheel. Just be a good defensive driver. There are always idiot drivers out there, but if you stay aware of the drivers around you, it will help prevent many accidents. Good luck!

Statistically speaking, it is very unlikely to happen to you again.

I should be more worried than you, as it hasn't happened to me yet, therefore the chances should be higher.

Don't worry. You will become a more careful driver as a result.

Maybe as a consequence, you will avoid a really major accident next week, which, were you not so careful, would have been unavoidable.

You'll be ok.

You need therapy. THis is a trauma. Maybe EMDR. You could develop PTSD from this. You need immediate treatment for this trauma. Also until you can get the treatment, write down all your scared feelings etc. don't force yourself to drive. give time. write down everything you think and feel. in a journal or diary.
and get to a counselor, quick. You should also take yoga to recover mentally and emotionally.

you don't get over it you just have to deal with it because with out a car how will you get to work or go shopping you just take it one day at a time and deal with it. so how do you think the people in the accidents you caused feel because you came out of no where and hit them

Have someone drive you until you feel well enuff to get back behind the wheel. Drive slowly, comfortably and always be alert, and you should be fine. Thats the best you can do.
