Muscles can be conditioned to stretch and lengthen over time. Of course, that is assuming that the person doesn't have any medical conditions that prevent the muscles from working normally.

If you want to do the splits, be sure to warm up the muscles by walking or other exercise first (about 15 minutes). Then slowly stretch until you reach the point where it feels uncomfortable. Hold that position. Slowly release. Repeat. Do not bob and bounce back and forth as people once did. It can pull a ligament.

Keep stretching just a tad beyond your comfort zone. Remember to work it very slowly. Be patient. Depending on your age, it will take a while--months.

Now, some people just have shorter muscles. Those with longer, flexible muscles find it easy to do the splits.

It is easier to keep your muscles limber when you start stretching as a child. As you age, your muscles tighten up. Some reach the point where they will not be able to do the splits.

Yes you can learn but if you are not quite young or naturally flexible it could take years of conditioning, it's aobut regular stretching and relaxing the muscles in your legs, but even people that are naturally flexible either can't or shouldn't do the splits without warming up first or they will tear something.

YES...my sister was in a dance group in high school and everyday single day at practice everyone did all kinds of stretches to loosen the inner thigh muscles up. The end result everyone was able to do a split...some girls could of course go farther down than others but the end result was the same. After high school she stopped dancing and stretching so she lost the ability to do splits again..but you get the point. IF YOU DON'T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT!!!
BUT YOU CAN GET IT BACK THROUGH INTENSE STRETCHING!
