I have been taking an anti depressant now for about 4 years. I have always struggled with my weight but I think that since I've been on the antidepressant, I've had the motivation to do something about it and over the years my weight has steadily gone down.

Yes, some anti-depressants can have that as a side effect. You can ask the doctor or psychiatrist prescribing it to you, what the side effect is, and if weight gain is one of them?
Medication can affect people differently. There are some that may not have weght gain effect for you. But if all else fails the doctor can also prescribe something to help you lose weight. You can let them know how much it bother you. There's a medication called Topamax, it works great.

Amitripline, Nortripline, any of the "pline" drugs to make you gain weight, its the chemicals, not how much you eat. I take 75mg Amitripline every night for muscle spasms in my legs at night. I have taken Zoloft, Paxil CR, and Prozac. These three do not make you gain weight. But I found that the Zoloft worked the best. If you can't afford it, if you get in touch with the manufacturer they will supply it to you for free, depends on your income though. Cash prices for most antidepressents run about $65 a month. But they are worth every penny! Believe me, they have really made a difference in my life. You might also want to try the over the counter drug "Relacore" WOW it put a smile on my fact and I actually found myself wanting to do things again. Relacore is a weight loss drug you see on TV but it has been discovered, as they say on TV, it is a feel good pill) One bottle lasts almost three months. Soits cost at first is high but how you benefit from the drug is worth it. Its mostly herbs and vitamins too! No chemicals! So get the Relacore. and get on the antidepressants you need. You'll be back to your ole self within two weeks!!! Go for it!

I've both lost and gained depending on the medication I was taking. you can ask your doctor if weight gain is a common side effect with your medication, but sometimes they don't know them all. There are lots of sites you can look on to check what people are saying. Here's one from the Mayo clinic; it has a special section on weight gain. I am sure that you can find some more if you need more information.

I've never taken them, but I know many who have, and yes, weight gain is very common when taking anti-depressants. It's also common with certain forms of birth control. It sucks being a woman.

Gained, have to watch what I eat and try to exercise. Doctor said because my body was getting back to normal and not depressed as much. Rather eat and gain a little weight than be depressed.
