If not, explain sura 4:34
Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and forsake them in beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely God is high, supreme.
If yes, how can you claim Islam supports gender equality?

Sura 4.34 came from a man, Muhammed, who put his 54 year old penis into a 9 year old "Child"!
http://www.geocities.com/AntiJihad/mo_pedo.html
A fake god 'allah' said this was O. K.
That is straight out of the pit of hell!
The real God's word tells us;
Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
1 Peter 3:7
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
It is wise to listen to Jesus who "Never" sinned, and what the "Real" God has to say!

As to the answer below me;
It doesn't matter how many words that are used,
You still can't spin the darkness into light!!

No it doesn't and we know what is the meaning of verse 4:34 which allows a husband after a series of actions to hit his wife gently with his finger or teeth brush on her shoulder, and not to hit the face and not to say harsh words all as a last resort to indicate that things has reached its limit and to save his marriage before divorce. Now compare this with the data from the USA and be the judge:
Nearly 25 percent of women said they were assaulted by a current or former intimate partner, according to a report released by the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July 2000. This research was based on the National Violence Against Women (NVAW) Survey on intimate partner violence in the United States. The survey was conducted through telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample of 8,000 women and 8,000 men about their experiences with intimate partner violence.
A summary of the findings are quoted from the report, below. the beating as Muhammad describes using four fingers and spank it on her shoulders without abuse. it's light beating. just like how you beat ur kid softly. and that only in the cause of turning against the man by looking at him down, or treating him bad, or doing something against his well such as bring a strange man to home while she is aware it will make her husband mad. so first advice them, but if they did not listen, then 2nd do not sleep next to them, if they still disrespect the man and disobey him then beat them lightly as i described above.
there are many mysterious conditions in marriage relationship which will keep it healthy and strong. God is well aware of his creation, and God is well aware of women psychology. those little things may help marriage to stay stronger and healthy. America has the highest divorce rate, many women opposed with the idea of men hate women. you should serve ur husbands for love and it's ur job as a wife, and the man should support you and show mercy and tender toward you. by this u will have a happy marriage life.

Muslims won't like to answer this question of course but the point is that any religious text is fallible because it was written by man, and in this case it is especially poignant that it was written by man and NOT woman.
A man wrote that into the Koran because at the time the scriptures were written it was common for men to beat their wives.
I think if you just took a drive down to texas you'll find plenty of redneck christians who follow the koran.
Idiot.

So according to 830a01YYqq spanking a woman as you would a child is ok. So the woman is a child??? I'm not being funny I just want to understand. Sorry helper what has beating a woman to do with US statistics? The laws in the US state that it is illegal to assault a woman. Have you tried the hidden statistics of a country like Saudi Arabia? Where if a woman had sexual intercourse before marriage she would be drowned by her father?
