I love taking pictures and have tried different digital cameras. I have not found a camera that is small enough to carry on trips and still be able to zoom in close enough to get a good picture at my children's school activities. I know I would like to also use my computer and my printer to crop and print using close-ups. My last Kodak digital is 5 Megapixal with a 3X Opital Zoom. I also have the printer dock as well. It takes pretty good pictures, but not close enough. I would like to have the option of auto focus. The one that I have is compact. Can put it into my back pocket. I like to be able to get the whole picture if I want or only my daughter sliding into second, my son's whole class on stage or just him singing. I have been looking at the Kodak Z612 but don't know if this is the right choice. Hope this is enough information. Please help. A mom with picture problems.

The entire Kodak Z series cameras are built for zoom. It basically boils down to your camera taking needs.

Z740 -(10x Optical zoom 5x Digital zoom, 5MP) is the third newest camera released. I owned this camera. It has a 12x optical zoom (which you know is important) and a 5x Digital zoom, The camera takes great pictures but since you have children i don't think its a great choice for you. When you are indoors its hard to take a great picture because there is no image stabelization (IS). IS is extremely important for low light situations (for instance the school assembely)

Z612 (12X optical zoom, 6.1 MP, IS) is the camera i just purchased. Great for the semi camera enthusiest! Fast speeds, larger screen, tad bit more features, but just as easy to use. Great quality (as most kodaks) but better lens (schneider kreuznach) which takes the picture a little faster (quicker focus with a better lense) and a little more crisp.

P850 (12X optical zoom, IS, 5.1MP) a tad bigger than the z series; its the first i would recommend in the kodak P series cameras, the second newest model in the "P"erformance line. This camera has a "hotshoe" which enables you to attach a flash. The flash on a regular camera is good for about 10 feet, by attaching this flash you are allotted about 30 additionial feet, which would work wonders for the kids and the zoom is just as grand. With the flash you won't need as much IS because you'll have a longer distance flash IE more clearer pictures with more zoom. I didn't choose this camera because there were several accessories i would need that was a bit outta my price range. it also has a RAW/TIFF file format, which makes compressing pictures easier.

Then there is the P712

If i had the spare change this would have been the camera for me, This masterpiece has about 7.1MP with IS and the 12X optical zoom! its GREAT! again it has the "hotshoe" for the additional flash and a great upgrade to the P850.

All 4 of these cameras are super light and compact. the smallest camera bag can hold them and a couple of memory cards, with a battery charger and be smaller than your purse (probably lighter too)!

The best comparison can be done at kodak.com, don't get intimidated by the pictures, they are alot smaller than they look on the site.

I hope i've helped. I'm just regurgitating the info given to me by the guy at the camera store :-), i was trying to decide the EXACT same thing not to long ago (3 days) so i know the feeling. Feel free to send me a message with any other questions!

I own a Kodak Z730 5 megapixel digital camera. It is among the best in its class. It consists of a large 2.2 inch screen and picture quality is amazing. The best feature of this camera is that it has 4X optical as well as 4X digital zoom. Other 5 megapixel cameras usually have 3X optical and 2X digital zooms that either have the same or a higher price tag than the abovementioned Kodak digital camera. I bought it from Best Buy for $199.99 It gives u the most bang for ur buck. Definitely a best buy.
