It's divergence. I'm from Australia and it's the same thing. Words evolve into different/ slang meanings.

Could be Boswell or USA being contrary.Le Coke, anyone or Le Royale?Or is that Le Grande Royale?Like the 2 Native Americans visiting New York City for the first time:they buy their first hotdogs..one says.."Hey!What part of the dog did you get...?Or rhyming slang that may say:"Do you want dead horse on that dog's eye?"Its all culture that determines the lingo.Different strokes for different folks. That's Boswell not Roswell.

Language grows with time and people. You figure we had the same exact language 200 some years ago, but now Americans have grown and adapted to change in culture and mixing of beliefs and cultures from other places. While in turn the UK was growing in response to their own culture and changes therein. Its because we change pure and simple, because we have had different experiences from them so our language and dialect has morphed differently than theirs.

English is all about context. A lot of our language is riddled with double meanings, proper and un proper usage, while yet some people just use the wrong words to express themselves.
