How about some dessert... nothing too fancy, but just enough to show you put some thought into it...

Flowers and candies, wines and liquers are the traditional 'hostess' gifts, but perhaps you don't like the possible romantic overtones there? If he has pets, bring a pet toy. Or burn a couple music CDs he might like. Fancy soap or a hanging sachet. A small picture frame.

Depends on what he's cooking. If it's a pasta or a salad, take a loaf of french bread or a bottle of wine (you didn't say how old you are). If it's something else, or you're not sure what it is, take a dessert.

Bring a bottle of wine, a 6 pack, flowers, or dessert.

Depends on what he is cooking just take a thing that will be needed the most and take like a little something to tell him thank you.

Ask him what he might be preparing and bring a dessert, like a pie or a nice wine

Well first you might want to ask him if he would like some help with cooking, since he said no then i would tell him that you were going to bring dessert, and your gratitude.
