Funny to read this this morning. We were checking into this last night with our 9yr old.
One problem we found was that under 14 unaccompanied had to be non-stop flights. For our destination this ended up being a big problem.
There are special rules depending on ages that you need to check into. Also some special fee's.
As far as safety, as long as someone is waiting at the other end, it's as safe as it is for anyone else flying.

Yes. I am a military wife, and we are always in a different state than the Grandparents. My children have flown, unaccompanied, many times before. All the Airlines take precautions when dealing with minors. If the kids are under 12 I believe, you can escort them to their gate. Otherwise, the Airline will only allow certain people, with photo ID to pick up kids, and they must be signed for. The kids also sit in the plane closer to the flight attendants so they can be supervised. It's a neat set up...I have not had any problems at all with it, and I am a worry wart. lol

It is very safe, just make that the airline knows that the child will be unaccompanied. Someone is with the child until they are picked up at the destination. I let my son fly by himself from Boston to Oakland CA when he was 8 years old, we didn't have one issue.

As a parent of 5 lovely children I have flown my children to different parts of the country to visit reletives on many occasions. There are several things you need to do. Firstly, research the airlines that have a hub at the airport closest to you. These airlines with a hub at your airport will offer a non-stop flight to the destination of your choice. Second, you will have to pay a fee to have your child escorted by a flight attendant assigned to your child. This fee will vary in cost depending on the airlines. Northwestern charges $75.00. You will need exact information on who will pick up your child on the other end and they will have to have identification to prove who they are. The airline will not release your child to just anyone. Lastly, talk to your child to help them with thier fears about flying and answer thier questions as openly and honest as you can. Thier first flight can be both scary and exciting. The airlines take every precaution they can to ensure that your child will be safe while flying with them.

Not safe. There are so many sexual preditors out there that your child could go missing very easily. The problem now is that at an airport you can't take your child to the gate yourself. I think children have to be 11 or 12+ to ride alone. Just dont do it. How would you feel if your child goes missing because you let him ride alone? He will be so scared.

Yes, I have. Yes, it's safe. The airline assignes a person to take care of your child until they are on the plane. The flight attendants care for them very well on the plane and another person from the airline is at the gate to greet them and bring them to you.

I fly a lot and see this often. I have never heard of a problem. The airline staff watches these kids like hawks, usually sitting up front near the galley and getting extra peanuts and soft drinks.

I flew my son from CT to Fl several times. The airlines were aware that he was flying unaccompanied. They escorted him form one plane to another when he changed flights, and kept him nearby them when he was on a short layover. He was also allowed to board early. When my ex or I went to meet him at the airport, they requested ID from us, (and of course witnessed my son't reaction, if he knew us or not). I found that they were extremely sensitive to the situation, and were wonderful. Hope your experience goes as well as mine did.

I was 15 when I flew alone, and that was even my first commercial flight too. It is perfectly safe. Especially at that age, the flight crew knows and they do a lot to try to watch the kid and make them comfortable alone.
