If someone decides he or she is an atheist, is there anything else to do? Meetings? An initiation? If you don't follow the atheist rules can the others kick you out of the club? Disinterest in religion would mean interest in atheism.

Yes, I am an atheist. I've met very few atheists I like, though.
I have only known a couple of nice, polite, courteous, sociable atheists who respect other peoples' rights to have their own beliefs. The vast majority of atheists I've met are too busy hating others, being judgmental, and hell-bent on trampling other peoples' right to have beliefs, not to mention the fact that they are enamoured with their own intellects however great or puny they may be. I am an atheist but I prefer not to hang out with other atheists as a general rule.
