I was going to say - wooden flooring every time!! But then read that you have a young son. It might be nicer for him to have carpet.
On the other hand, if you buy a lovely thick rug, he can sit on that when he plays.
I don't think you can beat wood floors - and they are so easy to keep clean. I am a mom of teenage sons and have cats, and carpet is impractical with that lifestyle!
Maybe a warm mahogony (reddish) floor would contrast well with your magnolia walls and the red wall. Then a rug in the dark red, would look very warm and cosy. A vase (not easy to break because of your little one) with red flowers against one of the magnolia walls.
Sounds lovely.

Go with wood flooring! Not only will it be beautiful with your current decor, it will last a lot longer than carpeting and is much easier to clean, especially if you have a four-year-old. If you installed carpet now, you'd have to think about replacing it again in a few years - say, before you sell your house - because let's face it: there are some stains that are practically impossible to get out of carpet. However, a wood floor that is properly maintained can last a lifetime! I also think that wood floors are a lot classier than carpet, and if you ever want to change your decor the wood floor will go with just about anything. If you are worried about the wood floor being too hard a surface for your little boy, you can always use throw rugs to make the room "softer".
Good luck with whatever you decide! It sounds like you have a lovely living room and I hope you have lots of fun with your redecoration project!

Wooden flooring. With a four year old around it will be easier to mop up. Also, the carpet traps dust and sometimes that does lead to asthama in small children.
When your boy grows up you can always carpet the floor.
If you like carpets what you could do is put a rug under your coffee table. Will look very chic . a deep red rug on a teak wood finish floor is cosy and inviting.

Wood floors are a great look, but are more expensive and scratch easily. A 4 year old may be a little harsh on them, and you'll end up sanding and refinishing them in a couple years.
Carpets are cheaper, but dont last as long. Good carpeting will stand up to the wear of kids. It will need constant cleaning and eventual replacement in 5-10 years.
Have you considered a laminate like Pergo? It has the look of wood, but is more durable and wont scratch.

I have always been a fan of wooden floors. But I have horrible allergies from just about anything (dust, pets, pollen, etc.).
I've read that for people with allergies wood floors are better because they don't trap the allergens quite like the carpet.
If you were to go with carpet: me & my husband have dark red furniture in one of our rooms and the walls are tan. It looks pretty good, but our furtniture is dark red with tan designs on it too.

I would go with wood flooring...just my personal preference. That is what you need to go by, which you prefer. I think wood is easier to keep clean and you can always put an area rug on it, carpet is carpet and I just don't think it is very clean after it has been down for a while.

Definitely wood floors. You could always get an area rug. Wood floors are so much nicer looking, carpets get dirty too easily. Especially with a 4 year old.
Your living room sounds nice with dark red on the walls - I love that.

I am changing to wooden floors because of the dust in the carpets. But I love carpet. It is warm on your feet and you always can go barefooted. I like my dark brown and you can change the color of your walls without changing your carpet. Plus it doesn't show dirt.

There are 2 sides. Wooden flooring can be dangerous as you can slip easily. If you are living upstairs the noise of a wooden floor can be horrendous (especially if you have children) to the people below you. Wooden floors (the cheaper variety) can be very easily damaged and if not laid ell they can warp. But as I said at the beginning 2 sides.

Wooden flooring. The best quality you can afford, bearing in mind that your son is likely to make accidental spillages, make marks with toys etc. (not just your son, though). Easier to clean too, I think. A nice cherry wood floor. Lovely. Perhaps a tasteful rug or two?
