If he hadn't, would his message be any more/less important. I'm not speaking from a religious standpoint but from a philosophical one. Why knock a guy who was telling people to be good to each other? Equally importantly, why knock people that know to be good to each other for not following the guidelines of an ancient and severely over edited text?

Was Jonas dead or alive in the belly of the whale.

You see, the text is to stress that Jesus will be going to the belly of the earth just like Jonas went to the belly of the whale.

Dead or alive doesn't look like what the author was interested in passing us the message.

So, let's say Jonah was alive in the belly of the whale. This means that Jesus was alive in the belly of the earth.

Aren't we suppose to have eternal life after we die?

So, let's say Jonah was dead in the belly of the whale. This means that Jesus was dead in the belly of the earth. After that, Jesus was resurrected. Sprang to live and went to see His disciples.

So, anything wrong with the message? Either way, it's consistent.

But what I like about religion is the Hope, the Strength, the Meaning and most of all the LOVE that it tries to teach so that in turn, we ourselves become the Hope, Strength, Meaning and Love to ourselves and others around us. All for the Glory of God.

Matthew 12:38-40 reads:

"38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

Jonah entered the great fish (NOT a whale) and was held there alive at God's command for three days. It is important to understand the whale was sent by God to save Jonah after he had been tossed off a boat during a storm. Jonah exited the whale alive.

While Jesus' physical body died on the cross, God the Father preserved Him alive for three days in Hell. During this time, he preached the Good News to all those in "Abraham's Bosom," kind of a waiting room adjoined to Hell, where believing Jews and gentiles went after death. After three days, He exited Hell alive. And He's still alive today, waiting for God the Father to tell Him to return.

It's as simple as that.

When Jesus was speared.. blood and water flowed. Ask any heart surgeon about what happens when a person has a heart attack. Jesus died of a cardiac arrest. He died of a broken heart. He had congestive heart failure.

Good book on the issue. "The Resurrection Factor" by Josh McDowell.

Jonah could have survived as the whale is a mammal and goes up for air. Is it any wonder Nineveh repented after seeing a bleached white man come up from the ocean with sea weed in his hair?

Our belief is that he did. All four gospels record that he died just before sundown. St. Paul's letters also refer to the crucifixion as resulting in death (and while St. Paul was not a direct witness, he indicates that he met with Peter and James the brother of Jesus in Jerusalem.)

Jonah is more than likely a parable. Given the geography of Nineveh (well inland) Jonah would have been swallowed by a large fresh water fish in the story - a ridiculous thing which the inspired writer knew to be ridiculous (biblical scholars widely believe Jonah to be written in a satirical genre of Hebrew literature.)

So in all likelihood, there's no reason to think Jonah is a literal precursor of Christ - more of a figurative one when Jesus said he would show them the "sign of Jonah."

No one really knows, and no one can really answer this precisely. Jesus was crucified, yes. Jesus was speared, yes. Jesus could have passed out on the cross and everyone thought He was dead.

Perhaps, that is why everyone thinks we was raised from the dead. Perhaps He came to several days after he was taken down from the cross.

No one really knows.

Comparing the two, it is meant that he was taken. Jonas was taken, but he did not die, he came back out. Jesus was taken from Earth by death, and came back to us in Spirit.

No. According to historical data, he(if existed)died on a Crux. But I suppose a Crux doesn't look as good hung on the wall, as his legs would've been spread - tempting thoughts of sin, perhaps...?

Be a christian = believe what you like, regardless of truth or evidence.

No he did not Die on the cross.

No court/judge would be so injust as to punish an Innocent person because of someone Else's sins. And God is not unjust.
