What a sad situation--I feel for you, Teri.
As the others said above, it would seem almost criminal to put your healthy, much-loved dog to sleep because you're having a hard time finding him a home. This must be very difficult for you.
It sounds as though your dog is experiencing extreme separation anxiety when he's away from you--with the right owners, he will get over this, but it will take a bit of patience on their part. Do you have any good friends, someone you feel comfortable entrusting your dog to, who understands the situation and would give him a home? If nothing else, perhaps you could take him to the local animal shelter, explain the situation, and ask that they place him with another family........I don't know what the shelters are like where you live, but I was able to do this very thing once, with good results (I live in a small town). He will at least have a shot at being adopted. Especially if he's healthy, already nuetered, and has his shots.
Best of luck to you.

dogs only live in the now. They will eventually get over the fact that your not around. I am sure this is hard to understand but as long as you find a really good home where they will treat the dog as you did the dog will be fine. It might take a couple days or a week but the dog will eventually be happy. I mean lets put it this way; would you rather have lived with a friends family if your family couldn't take care of you or just have you put to sleep? i know dogs are not exactly humans but they are living things and deserve respect. I know you will make the right decision.

That's a tough one. Most dogs will eventually adapt to a new home, but some dogs get extremely attached to one person and can even stop eating and drinking if they go away. If I couldn't find my dogs a really good home, I would put them to sleep rather than worry that they had been abused or abandoned. I mean, you raised him from a pup and you're giving him up - the next person won't love him nearly as much as you do. Personally, I'd live in a cardboard box on the street before I'd give up my dogs, but sometimes your personal situation makes it impossible. You could try a no-kill shelter that carefully screens its adoptive families. Hope it works out.

Please, don't put him to sleep! There are many wonderful homes out there that will take your dog. He has many good years ahead of him. Just take the time to find him a home where you know he will be will taken care of. Visit the home a couple of times and take the dog with you. Stay awhile and observe how the family is with the dog. Make sure they have a good yard for him to play in. Also ask them plenty of scenario questions, such as what they will do with him when they travel, what vet will they take him too, how much time will they be able to spend with him each day, etc. It will take time, but he will get used to his new home and live a happy life. Yet, he'll always remember you. Hopefully you can make it back to visit him.

The people who took the dog had no patience whatsoever. What did they expect? No he would not be homesick forever. The dog looks at you like you were its parent. If you left your parents would you feel homesick? Of course you would. Would you want to be put to sleep? I don't think so. If you cannot find a new owner I suggest that you bring your dog to a shelter that does not euthanize its animals but puts them up for adoption.

he won't be homesick forever and he will forget ya I don't that isn't want you want to hear but it is best for him on the long run. 4 years old is not that old for a dog. I say stay on your search for a good home post an add in the paper and then you pick which home you want him to go to
DO NOT put him down why kill him there is no good reason for that and if you do that you will never see him again.

How could you even consider killing your dog just because you're moving and you can't keep him? That is very ignorant and irresponsible. So are the people that only had him for 2 hours. If I didn't already have four dogs, I would take him. He will need time to adjust to a new environment.
Killing the dog is not an option. Dogs are not disposable.
It's sad that you can't take him with you on your move, but he didn't do anything to cause that. Please don't kill him. I don't know about your local paper, but my local paper will let you run a FREE ad if you're trying to give something away. Call your local ASPCA or Humane Society, or bred-specific rescues. Just please don't kill the dog.

Either way is not fair to the dog. I believe when people get pets and that should mean to be forever loved. I hear this all the time moving and cannot take it with you. Why? If you had a child and you were moving would you find it a new home or have it put to sleep because you couldn't find the way to somehow keep them. This is so common with people and their pets when they move. It is not fair either way to the dog because it loves you and needs to stay with you.

I'm sorry you need to leave your dog. He should adjust after a while. 2 hours isn't near enough time to give up and consider euthanizing him. I had to put my dog in a kennel for 4 days and he was just miserable. He should be able to adjust to a new home if he is with a loving and patient person. Good luck.

Putting your dog to sleep is cruel. You should have never got a dog in the first place if you even think like that.
2 hours is not a long time for him to adjust.
Bring him to a shelter where they will find a loving/caring home for him..
you don't want him to suffer yet you would kill him? hmmmmmmm
