When I was 18 I joined a community service organization called CITY YEAR. It has national sites in over 14 states and even in South Africa. I participated in numereous physical service projects and activities. I was involved in inner city educational efforts and conducted after school programs. In all of that I learned values thast would last me a lifetime. It taught me to love and preserve my community and world. It taught me to appreciate and encourage diversity and to live by a standard of right actions toward my fellow people but my environment as well. The experience I had joining this program changed my life in a million and one ways. I would recommend this program to any 17-24 yr old anywhere on the globe. It has been 6 yrs since I left and everyday I use and live by the things that I learned. I am a better person everyday for it. I took vows as a member of CITY YEAR and one thing I vowed was that "In the face of apathy I will take ACTION". I have done that and other things I vowed and always will.

Sponsored a family from New Orleans to our city and got them housing and helped get them jobs. Plus many years ago, I spearheaded an effort to get a 17 mile bikeway built that at the time, I took a lot of heat for since some people said that it was a waste and no one would use it. Now it is our best tourist attraction and visited by thousands.

I contribute to the world as I work and provide a function or service in the marketplace, and try not produce too many waste products, -whether it's plastic bottles thrown away or car exhaust.

I'm a retired career truck driver. I've saved the lives of hundreds of other motorist by giving them time and space when they goofed. A lot of them, flipped me off and blamed me for their error, but I know the truth.

WORKED IN CONJUCTION WITH AMERICAN AND SWISS COMPANIES AND FEED THE CHILDREN TO HELP OAXACA,, A STATE IN MEXICO THAT GOT HIT TWICE IN 1997 BY TWO OF THE STRONGEST HURRICANES. ONE CAT. I WRITE TO LET PPL KNOW OF WHAT IS POVERTY AND WHAT IS HANDCAPPED IN COUNTRIES WHERE NOT A LOT OF HELP IS RECEIVED IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.
LOOK UP TILTEPEC, OAXACA "HAVE YOU TRIED SURFING IN THE MUD" that may give you an idea of what kind of work lays out there for many people to pull in and help out.
