Cannibalized? What the hell does that mean? In American, Cannibalism is the eating of one human by another. I have no idea how you intended this word in the context of language.
First of all, we "Yanks" are slowly returning English (soon to be named "American") back to its original state.
English USED to be a phoenetic language, meaning that it was spelled like it sounded.
Unfortunately, two things happened which bastardized the language:
The first was the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066. This led to the introduction of French words and spellings into English.
The second was the invention of the printing press in 1447. It used to be that books were copied by monks, by hand. The system of commerce which emerged from the invention of the press involved pricing of printed material (primarily books) based on the number of pages they had. Printers figured out that if they found ways to print more pages in books, they would make more money per book. So they put extra letters into words to extend the actual length of the material.
Now Americans, unhindered by such a system and practicality-oriented, are, by purpose and/or ignorance, returning English to its proper form, deleting unnecessary letters from words.
Hence we have "color" instead of "colour" (which would be pronounced "col-ower" in our pronunciation system, which I do to annoy my British friends), "program" instead of "programme," etc.

Somehow you have missed the point of the English language entirely. English is a constantly evolving language expanding still at a phenomenal rate. It gains its strength by borrowing words from numerous other languages. If English hadn't borrowed freely from French it would just be Dutch spoken in a mumble. In the coming years I expect the American version to load up on Asian and Latin American words, with a sprinkling of Arabic and Farsi.

Unfortunately, the world has changed and there is no perfect society. I am sure that even within Great Britain you will find massacred versions of the English language. Read a book, listen to a song, watch a movie, etc they are not perfect. Accept that which is and move on.

There is a course: It's called American Television.
It isn't another BBC documentary on Cheese or an episode of Ms. Marples, so please be careful not get to your Brit wits overstimulated.
--By the way, American television sucks just as horribly as BBC fluff, but of course there are some gems. But it is completely understandable why you knight all your entertainers, to be British and entertaining at the same time requires great effort.

I agree with you! Coming from Australia, we've always thought it was admirable that the Yanks changed their language [this is true!] to be independent, but it is a bummer that spell-checks, etc. are coded in American spelling!!
It's unfair to those of us who actually speak English as opposed to American.
