I like the long eared variety, but you should only buy them once you are experienced. I think you should just start off with a fruit one as they are bigger and easier to hit the golf orb with.

golf bats. Go to a sporting goods store and get some clubs that are tailored to your height. If you get too long of a club or too short, then your swing will be all screwed up and you'll want to give up after your first swing. GL, golf needs patients.

If you're just starting then go for Cavity Backed clubs, preferrably overside. These are slighly easier to hit and tend to be a little bit cheaper than Blades which most pro's use.
Also if you're not sure if you are going to continue then don't pay a fortune for "makes". However, if you are convinced to give it a go then don't buy cheap tat.
Also be careful on the type of "name or make" you buy. Ping look slightly off-set so maybe hard to hit. Titleist don't really make beginners clubs, nor do Taylor Made. Mizuno have a nice range of cavity backs and Macgregor tend to be favoured by newly started golfer.
Ultimately you are best to go to your local pro and have a swing of various clubs as they will all have different lies, lofts, shafts etc. Make sure you get the right one for you and a local pro will be able to give you advice on this.

they are not bats, they are clubs! the best set a clubs for a novice would be a cast iron cavity backed club that is offset with a large sweet spot. if you want to spend a lot of money something like a set of Calloway clubs would be an excellent choice. on the otherhand if you don't want to spend a lot of money, there are a lot of cheaper generic type brands with the same design so to speak.
and buy the book Golf for Dummies. you sound like you need it!

Beware! IGolf bats are rare creatures, take one home and before you can say "Four" they will be starting a colony in your loft. This means that that your home will become a conservation zone. Should this happen I recommend the services of a well known expert. I'm not sure of his number but he has a bright red phone and lives with his partner Robin (nice man bad dress sense though).

every thing that smalls said
but you just go to your local sports store and well ask for 1or 2 woods and u need about 4-7 irons
need a putter too.also a wedge. Tell them a 3degree wood is ok. Also u need 3,5,7,and 9 irons (they are classified by #'s)
Try asking for a good instructor because that really counts
