In ancient times, it was a way to control paternity...if women had sex with multiple men, then it was nearly impossible to know who fathered their child(ren), and there were issues, esp with boy children, inheritance, etc.

I don't understand why people allow mythology to dictate how they live their lives...live well, don't harm others, and be the best "you" that you can be...

There is no place in the Bible that tells us what must be done before a man and a woman are considered to be married. However, There is a difference between a man and a woman being married, and just living together. See John 4:17-18. Since God has not told us much about that difference we must conclude that a marriage is something that is accomplished soley by God between a man and a woman. Since the first miracle Jesus performed was at a "marriage celebration," we must conclude that a marriage celebration is a public declaration of something that God has already accomplished in the lives of a man and a woman. "What God has joined together, let not man put assunder." It appears then to me that the two of you are already married before God and all that is lacking is an optional, formal, public declaration which could be nothing more complicated than to start identifying each other as my husband and my wife. The hulabaloo that we have turned the wedding celebration into in this culture is more about capitalism and culturalism than about Godliness.

Well, lets think about it for a minute. You mention that it seems to be an 'all across the board' world wide kind of thing. We are talking cross continents, cross cultures, cross the oceans....in all races and nations this has been taught for THOUSANDS of years to be the *best* choice.

Now, along comes the sexual revolution and suddenly people just think that they are so far 'beyond' that.

Why is it God's business. He created us for a purpose and with a design. The sanctity of the human body and the beauty of our sexuality has been trivialized by society. Sex is a WONDERFUL thing that has been given to us and has been trashed by this throw away society.

There are a number of perfectly GOOD and logical reasons not to have sex prior to marriage that have NOTHING to do with God. 1. You cant get an STD if you are not having sex. 2. You are more likely to have cervical cancer the younger you begin having sex. 3. The chances of contracting HPV increases the younger you begin having sex. 4. The emotional toll it takes on a young person when the relationship does not work out is heightened if they are in a sexual relationship. AND....I could go on....
FYI, people that sleep together and/or live together prior to marriage have a much higher rate of divorce.

So, if you believe in a personal and loving God who only wants what is best for us. Do you think he would be concerned in this matter? Of course.....

I can offer two possible reasons, though they are merely speculation at this point.

First, sexually transmitted diseases were not fully understood during the time when many religions were being formed. However, it was observed that those who engaged in sexual relations with many people were more likely to suffer the affects of an STD. While at the same time, those who abstained from sex until married, only having sexual relations with their spouse, didn't suffer those affects. Hence, the STDs were viewed as a punishment from god (whatever the religion) for an immoral lifestyle.

The second is considering that many religions were written by old men, those who probably couldn't sustain an erection anymore. Hence, they were pissed that they couldn't go out and get some, so they tried to convince others to abstain from the same activity. Misery loves company.

It is God's business, all right, he created sex for married couples, man and woman, for procreation, and pleasure between husband and wife, who are you to say or judge what God should or should not do, he has the right to make the rules, not you, anyway if you are going to be married soon anyway and you really are serious about each other why is it you cannot wait till you are married, doesnt sound much like love to me, if you can't wait, love is patient and and if you can't wait now what makes you think, that you will wait to get home to each other later on when you are married, instead of going elsewhere for your sex then?If you think you really love each other then you would wait, but are you sure it's love and not lust, because lust will not last, love will love is self control, lust has no self control,I think you have some serious attitude problems there, and don't get offended you did ask! God has every right to say, how, he wants people to behave, or the things he wants, or doesn't want, people to do! How would you like to bake a cake, and that it turns around and tries to tell you what to do or not to do? Sounds to me like you are a rude piece of bread!

I think the key idea is you don't really know if you will be married soon. You don't know what is going to happen tomorrow and if you thought with every man that you liked that you would "soon be married" what happens if you aren't soon married?

What happens if you deeply love someone and you get pregnant by them and then they decide they aren't interested in the responsibility? Well then you are a single mom and the guy you thought loved you actually wasn't mature enough to handle the natural consequences of the powerful, intimate act of love.

God forbids sex before marriage as a protection - protection for our hearts and our bodies and our lives and our children. It is simply a safeguard because God loves you enough to want the very best for your life.

God is the author of life, our Heavenly Father. The act of love involves the possibilty of procreation. Marriage assures (somewhat) protection for both parties and offspring. So yes, God has a say. The institution of marriages protects everyone concerned.

i know you're probablly looking for an answer that affirms your pro-sleeping together stance but that's not what this is.

Put simply God created marriage pure, holy and good and he intended all sex to be within marriage, because outside of it, whter in adultery or pre-marital sex is messy. It hurts people, it connects people to each other when they don't want to be connected. Essentially the true desire of God is to see sex which is a uniting force as utilized only in marriage

You have mixed up religion with a deity. I think it mostly has to do with a man knowing that he is the father, that he is passing on his genes and in that way becoming immortal. If a woman is forbidden to have sex before marriage she will be a virgin and therefore th man can control the womb.
