CNC machines are a type of robot but they have a number of different characteristics from what we generally classify as robots. Here are a few of the basic differences:

1. CNC machines generally have a smaller number of degrees of freedom or axis of movement. Basic CNC lathes have 3 degrees of freedom. CNC mills have three or four degrees of freedom. Robots typically have more than 7 degrees of freedom. Some robots may have more than 12.

2a.The language used to create their movements is different. The one of the most comon languagues for CNC machines is called G-code. Robots have an entirely different language structure based on vectors.

2b. Because of the differences in the languages CNC machines can be programmed from a keyboard. Robots in the past have been programmed by manually moving the robot through the steps or movements that are required.

2c.Yes, there are robots that will train themselves just like peeople learn how to move as we grow up, or learn a new activity. Just as with us it is a trial and error process. A trainer must help the robot or person learn by correcting errors.

3. Because of their structure CNC machines very good at fabrication functions and cutting materials. They are very stiff and allow lots of force to be used to remove material using cutters. Because of their structure Robots are better at assembly functions or putting parts together.

This is changing Robots are becoming stronger and more ridgid (able to resist forces). As a result there are a number of application producing complicated parts where robots are being used in the fabrication processs.

A CNC is a numerically controlled piece of equipment that has been programmed to mimic the movements required to cut somethiing from a block of steel or aluminum. A robot has similar functions but is more versatile because a robot can have far reaching arms with lots of dexterity to pick things up...move them, flip them over, etc. I suppose on some level a CNC would be sort of an early stage computer...albeit a dinosaur.

It seems everyone has a different definition for "robot" or "autonomous".

I think that for something to be called a "robot" it must be "autonomous". To be "automatic" isn't sufficient. Something that performs repetitive tasks programmatically is "automatic". Something that reacts to stimuli and makes "decisions" on how to respond appropriately is "autonomous". So, unless a CNC machine has sensors (I don't know what a CNC is?), then I don't think it counts as a true robot.

But you might use an adjective to say that a CNC is robotic (or it resembles a robot), or has robotic parts.

There isn't a difference. They are both autonomous machines that can perform repetitive tasks. A robot is a device that once programed can complete its task without any further help or instructions. Turn it on and it will do its task. Most people have a misunderstanding of what a robot is. Anything remote controlled by a person is not a robot! They are called RC devices.
