M1Abrams, Challenger, L'Clair (sp), T-90S, Merkava Mk 4.....I'd say the latest model of Leopard II Main Battle Tank.
Abrams are fast, T-90s and Leclerc are faster. Merkava 3&4 are faster offroad.
All modern tanks can hit moving targets while they're moving. Leclerc and Merkava4 can do it even better through FCS-integrated autotracker and T-90 even much better through bore-launched ATGMs.
German Rh120mm/L55 tungsten, israeli-improved 120mm GIAT tungsten and russian 125mm BM-44 U-Ni-Zn-alloy rounds have the same power through higher velocity (1750-1800 m/s instead of Abrams 1650 m/s)
And in HEAT-rounds soviets always led anyway, their new tandem charge HEAT-round with DU-liner has 800mm RHA-penetration.
I think, what gives me the choice of Leopard, besides the german history of good tank design, is their ability to deploy infra-decoys and smoke screens to hide from enemy tanks and heat seeking missiles.

Isn't the M55 the new Battle Tank? Depends on the time. Some were great but never used in combat, some were terrible and than God they weren't used in combat!
In Vietnam they would pull them into one of the small rivers, There they got 2 things washed!!
The Russian T90's sound better than the Abrahms. The Abrahms is suppose to be fast, but early I heard a lot of bad things about it.
The Russian tank can also fire missiles
We had the M60's

The M1 A1 Abrams tank is the most indestructable tank ever built. It can withstand a direct hit from any known enemy munition. It can also protect its crew from a direct hit by our own Hellfire missile (got a buddy who was in one when some ****** pilot thought they were enemy) Look it up online. You will find that it is capable of locking on to a target and moving at up to 30 miles per hour, through turns bumps and whatever. This is the only tank in use by the United States Marine Corps today.

The greatest tank in terms of ability to destroy an enemy tank would probably have to be the M1A2 Abrams, currently in use by the US Army and US Marine Corps. Their armor is nearly unmatched, and their main gun can beat through the armor of any other tank in existence today.
In terms of all-around capability, I'd go with the Israeli Merkava. They've had years of experience fighting both tank wars and in urban settings, the Merkava is built not only to destroy enemy armored formations but to support the other combat arms as well.

German Panther. Good armor and faster than the Tiger. Out gunned the Allies in WWII, but then again, any German tank did that. Russian tanks were pretty good but not used wisely so they don't count except for scrape metal.

The Israeli Merkava would probably kick the Abrams all over the map.
Of course US Tank development has basically stopped, thanks to Rumsfeld. He seems to think that tanks are too heavy to ship around the world. Tell that to the guys who drive them, or the guys that are getting blown up in humvees.

The Israeli Merkiva is the only tank actually designed by tankers.
In combat it has proven itself to be highly reliable, hard hitting, and well protected. It even has a troop compartment to carry it's own infantry support
