Go to AA. listen to what we say there... a life of sobriety begins with one day. You will find a lot of people that you can relate to. You will hear their stories and know how bad alcoholism can get. If you want to beat addiction then you have to learn about it first.

I have been on the wagon and off the smokes for 5 weeks now. The first thing you need to do is want to give up. Choose your day carefully and think ahead for a few weeks to make sure you can keep up your resistance (i.e. no weddings, birthdays, etc).
Once you have started you need to fill your time creatively as the best way to give up a bad habit is to take up a good habit. Learn that musical instrument you always wanted to, read that book you have promised forever, exercise, try new foods. Most of all stay away from temptation such as pubs and clubs.
A neat trick is to leave your cash and cards at home so that you have no means to buy booze and fags.
Another good trick is to reward yourself. You don't need to treat yourself but acknowledge that you are doing a 'good thing' and be positive.
None of this is easy and I have given up smoking loads of times. However I am determined to succeed and am off the booze to help me stay off the smokes.
Good luck.
p.s. try local help groups, medical advice, gum/patches, hypnosis if you like but eventually it all comes down to willpower.

Firstly why did you start drinking and smoking in the first place. Compare that to why you still do it and want to quit. You definitely need to stop if you know what's good for you. Drinking and smoking only destroys your body - your looks especially, then your brain.Drinking destroys your brain cells. I'm glad you've posed such a question. You also gotta look at how this bad habit challenges your future, especially when you consider to settle down - if you not.So how do you quit - if it's the company you're in - make new friends with sober habits.Put up reminders of the consequences of how drinking & smoking will impact your future - present & beyond.I think it's totally gross to have someone breathing on you who reeks of smoke and alcohol.

I just stopped.30-40 cigs and 6 beers and a bottle of vodka plus a little nice wine a day.Simply gave up both on the same day. I do not recommend it without mental preparation unless you are into severe side effects.Physical and mental.Very interesting but mostly horrible and last a week or so intensely and taper off fast thereafter. Haven't touched the stuff since.Sobriety brings new experiences.Suffer fear again and this brings long suppressed adrenal glands into play.Taking up freestyle rockclimbing soon.

Do not hang out with people that do, or places that have.
Replace those activities that would expose you to use with activities that would be rewarding, fulfilling, enjoyable but without the use of booze & smoking.
Pray to almighty god for help, be specific in your asking.
Think about the money you'll be saving and the better health you will have.

Give your self a goal at the end off the year or six months if you do it, like a holiday off a lifetime you can not afford, but all the money you will save will pay for your holiday .
Good luck .

simple, stop using them, I've given up booze, cigarettes, heroin, speed, caffeine and I've almost given up meat, i only eat meat when someone else buys it and then only if they don't want it and to avoid throwing it away, by the way I'm depressed to **** after giving it all up after false promises that i will feel much better for giving it all up, giving it all up isn't best for everyone
