After 36 years of partying and enjoyment I feel I have wasted my time in the pursuit of pleasure. Am I wrong to feel like this? Should I just be greatful for the fun that I have had and move on?

Well, I can understand your feeling, but you don't have to be paralyzed by regret. Even the worst events in life can be turned into positives depending on what you've gleaned from it all.

You can't undo the past, so the best thing to do is ask yourself what you can do *today* to be a better person. What can you do today that will cultivate a sense of purpose in your life? What gives you joy and satisfaction? Do those things and you'll eventually forget that you spent a lot of time in useless pursuit.

And here's something else to think about: the experiences you've had in your life (all that partying brought into your life) don't have to go to waste. Think about what you've learned as a result of how you've lived. Use that to help someone else make wiser choices.

You only get one shot at life so you should enjoy it. However, you sound like you have doubts and you cant be enjoying it enough or you wouldnt be asking if you were wasting your life. Worse case scenario you have wasted some time, not your life you still have time! Try to remember what goals you had for your life when you were younger. Have you achieved them? If not now is the time to start. If you have then I would say you have done pretty well. You can always set new goals and give yourself a time frame. Whatever you do think about what will make you happy as that is the most important thing. Live each day as if it is your last and remember you only get one shot at life so make it count. Have fun and be happy!

Well, something inside you wants to change, otherwise you wouldn't be feeling this. Obviously you are the sort of person who wants to accomplish something further than just partying and enjoyment. So, find out what that is, be grateful for all the fun you've had and move on. It's a stage you've been through and now you're moving into the next phase of your life. You can still have fun, you know, it's just that your priorities change.

Bit of both. Time to go soul searching sounds like to me. Why are you here, what is it all about. Gets worse cause sooner or later you realize it is not about pleasure alone. Consider yourself lucky. Many never have the realisation and die ignorant ;-) And 36 is a baby. I'm 41 now and i'm starting to feel like a toddler again. I'm moving on, but teenagers just don't make sense no more, except for the odd one or two.

You are asking this in the mental health section so there is more going on here. You have a history you can fall back on. You can rely on the past. As for the future you need to write down a plan there is 36 yrs more to go. What have you learned?

You know, that question came up in my life in my thirties. I decided a change was in order and got married, started a family and career. So, in my opinion, you're OK. Why feel wrong about having fun (as long as it wasn't at other's expense)? Yes, feel grateful that we have the opportunity to have fun in this society and move on. Educate yourself in an interesting subject and make a good living out of it. There's plenty of fun to be had out there while being productive. I'm having the time of my life at 54.

It's impossible to judge anyone elses life but your own, since each life experience is subjective, you will always judge anyone's life on the basis of how you feel about your own life.. Therefore, the only one who can decide if you have wasted your life, is yourself. There once was a very smart man who said;Time wasted whilst being enjoyed, is not wasted.I see no reason why you should not continue to enjoy yourself.

Listen, what ever you have done in these 36 years, has made you who you are.. and has made you realize that you want another path to take.. well, then take charge, and visualize exactly what you want.. I guess your friends have moved on, you saw them with their families, and wanted that.. that means you have something to work for.. If I were you, I would save up money now, before you have kids, because once you have kids, saving is out of the question.. take advantage that you are in another economical state then your friends were as they started out, and your maturity will help you solve problems that might have seemed to your friends like they were drowning in a glass of water..

I'd say you made the most of your life. If you'd hadn't enjoyed yourself till your mid thirthies then it would have been a waste.

Provided of course you didn't neglet other areas of your life. But at 36 you're still young enough to achieve a lot in the rest of your life anyway
