it probably depends on the laws of your state... but I would think that unless the step-parent adopts the step-child... he/she is as financially responsible for the step-child as some stranger on the street. No he/she is not really under any LEGAL obligation to support the step-child.

I don't think they are,they are responsible for who they married,by the true missing parent is financially responsible.

Yes they are they are just as much responsible as your biological parents. Unless the parents get divorced. Then they wouldn't be responsible.
