I wasn't going to post, but couldn't resist. Assuming we're talking flat panel LCDs, many of these posts are nonsense. LCDs do last longer and consume less power than plasmas. However, if you were to compare a Pioneer Elite to the best LCD, you would probably go with the Pioneer. It's all about personal preference and how much you want to spend. Personally, I believe the Sharp Aquos is just fine. Pixel count is high, blacks are fine, colors are great, longevity is unbeatable, and price is reasonable.

Remember that these are just people's opinions. When someone asks me what speakers I recommend, I say it's what sounds good to you, has a decent reputation for quality, and is in your price range. Similar situation with TVs... What looks good to you? Does it have the features you want? Does the product have a good reputation? And so on.

Here are the key differences:

Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD. (There is something about looking directly at glowing phosphors!)

Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 720 x 1250 range.

Plasma is heavier and uses more power.

There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable or they don't last as long, but that may not be true with the latest models.

Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. There are ways to minimize this, however. many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen.

Plasmas come in largers sizes, although large LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive.

LCD contrast and brightness can be reduced when viewing from off-center.

Take a good look at LCD it is clearly clearer than plasma but the main thin to think of is which style has been in production longer chances are that you are looking at this site on an LCD. The technology is proven and has been around for a while even to the point where a cheap off brand LCD would be worth your money just make sure that screen response time is 500ms or faster so that it avoids pixelation on fast moving picture also make sure that the contrast ratio is 800:1 or higher for the best color. Samsung makes a good set and so does Sony if your into brands to impress your friends if not the cheap set @ wal mart by ilo is very good even though its under $1000 ( thats if you want 32" or smaller)

Plasma sets do have somewhat better contrast than LCD sets, thereby giving them a more pleasing picture.

There are, however, two problems with plasma when compared with LCD TVs:

Plasma sets "burn in" images that're displayed on the screen too long. Such instances include pictures that're digitially frozen onscreen, TV station ID logos, or the top and bottom black bars that are part of normal "letterboxing" of widescreen movies.

Once these images are "burnt in," there is no way to remove them; you just have to learn to live with the distraction of seeing the ghosts in the picture.

The other disadvantage to plasma is that they simply don't last as long as LCD: 40,000 hours (about 4.6 years if left on 24 hours a day) for plasma, versus over 100,000 hours for LCD (about 11.5 years of round-the-clock use). Moreover, as they age, plasma's picture darkens and becomes less vivid.

LCD sets' backlights do wear out, but most can be replaced for a couple-hundred dollars; when a plasma set wears out, you throw it out, which is painful if you paid several thousand dollars for it.

Plasma is an inert gas also which means that if it does last longer it will have to eventuallybe recharged, but a LCD tv has very short range of side view once you get away from the center the picture starts getting darker plus you can't hardly find a HDTV LCD and if you do it is really expensive and yes HDTV is worth it.

One reason LCD is better than Plasma is that the LCD won't burn in if left on pause

LCDs are crystals that r liquified inthe diplay but plasma is some kind of wierd"state of matter".if the plasma in the display goes wrong ,infact it tends to go wrong when u leave it in pause.some decent DVD players ,4 this reasons have screen savers if left in pause for long time

LCD sets last 850% longer than plasma sets while working under normal conditions.

no reason at all. plasma is actually a gas and not circuits. by electrical manipulation it produces different shades of colours {brightness} that lcd could only dream about. its also smaller thinner and less likely to spoil from circuit boards.
