I'd really like to understand more about the laws of Islam so I can understand why we have so many problems between christians and muslims.

theres so many problems coz of a lack of understanding. i wouldnt trust an online version of it. why dont you go to a local mosque and ask someone there. they'll be willing to help and enlighten you for sure

Try surfing www.islamicity.com or www.al-islam.com. The main problem between christian and muslims is the difference in the main belief system which in Islam, it is called "aqidah". Both muslims and christians believe in one God but the Islamic teaching does not recognize the concept of trinity. Apart from that both religions teach people to do good things (the true teaching. Not the negative image showed in the media). Even both muslims and christians share the same history. Both religion recognize Adam, Noah and Moses as prophets or messenger of God. One fact that some christians don't realize is the the true teaching of Islam require the muslims to love Jesus a.s. (peace be upon him).
