What are the rules with car insurance? I know if you are under the age of 25 the price is ridiculous. So obvioulsly you get the insurance under someone (your parents, other family, etc). Now to get insurance, does the car title have to be in that same persons name who is getting the insurance? Anyone know how to get cheaper insurance? Just wondering if anyone has any advice...

First of all, even if you have your insurance under someone, such as a parent, it doesn't make it cheaper. What makes it cheaper is the multi car discount.

Secondly, the registration requirements are different for different companies. I work for Liberty Mutual, and we require that a car either be independently registered or jointly registered by one or both of the Named Insureds (the owner of the policy, i.e. parents, if you were to piggyback their insurance. If you got your own policy, you would be the Named Insured.) Even though we require that, some companies don't. Geico and Titan are two companies that don't require it, I think.

Third, if you are going to piggyback your parent's insurance, you must be living with them OR the vehicle must be registered in their name alone. If not, you'll need your own policy. If you insure it under their name even though its not registered to them and you don't live with them, if you get into an accident you're be assessed an "premium avoidance" notice. Those are bad. Those will have a negative impact on your parent's insurance, and later on, yours.

Premium is generally the worst when you're under 21. Between 21 and 25, its not so bad. It doesn't hurt to shop around and get several quotes for yourself. Plus, it'll help your rates when you're 25... in the insurance world, men aren't considered adults until they're 30, unless they marry or have a bachelor's.

Hope this helps.
