For the same reason all texts from that period do, they thought that the world they knew was all there was. They didn't know about other countries or continents.

Your..question kinda confusing..anyway i'll try to giv u a hint why so and so..

Why do say that quran has many local and national elements which i presume from arab country..well thus because during that time there's so many sin done there, so quran is sent to guide people back to the right path, same as bible where the scene is also in arab country..

Both knowledge in the Quran and Bible wasnt only focus on arab people and their norms but it's looked into all aspect of human life..so when it was sent to earth it already meant to guide the mankind to the right path..

Quran was a revelation for the contemporary generation and the generations to come. Since Islam is a religion for the common man Quran explains religious issues using examples from real life. Hence you can find description of events which were contemporary to Quran or from the past. BTW, Quran also makes a lot of prophecy's many of which have come true.

Well, that's simple. Because it is not more than a man-made book of rules and stories, written by someone (not Mohammed, as he was known to be illiterate) in the 6th century for the people who lived then.
It has no relevance for modern life, and we should accept that. Unfortunately there are millions of uneducated and brainwashed people who will believe anything and everything if it is sold to them in the right way. Like the Bible, the Quran is just a story book for gullible people.

Tony,

I enjoyed your well considered answer. Just one small, but significant point.
Mohammad did not condone violence against those who simply do not share his, or other Muslim's belief - he condoned it only as a method of self-defence against attackers of the faith.
I think you and many others around the globe would do well to acknowledge this difference.
Also, from your answer, I suspect that you are a Christian, and as such would be interested to know your opinion on the many examples of the condonement of violence in your 'holy book'.

It's all about story telling. The Bible does it too.
Mohammad recognized how monotheism can bring people together, but failed to realize how his open criticism of the book he plagairized would cause dissention.
He includes dozens of stories from the Old Testament, but changes them slightly. He starts off by praising the Bible as the word of God, and then he changes parts of it in HIS book. When he finally managed to convert enough people to his "new religion", he tried to bring his message to Jews and Christians. They basically told him, "no thanks, we like our faith just the way it is". This rejection changed his tone in the later chapters of the Quran. He tells his followers not to make friends with Christians and Jews, even though he tells his followers they can marry one.
He criticizes the Jews & Christians no less than 36 times in his book. Here's one of my favorite verses from the Quran...

[4.157] And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure.

Of COURSE Jesus wasn't killed, if YOU say so, Mohammad!
When you ask a Muslim about the disagreement between stories in the Quran and the Bible, they insist "The Bible has been changed to refute Islam!", but they typically go silent when they are confronted with the fact that the Dead Sea Scrolls match the disputed verses in the Bible. Yeah yeah yeah, it's all one big conspiracy to oppress Islam. Open your EYES!

Also, he prescribes violence towards people who do not believe in his message. This has been abused over and over and over to justify violent acts committed by angry Muslims who percieve opposition to Islam.

P.S...
I'm reading what this "shaznay" is saying, and...HAH!

Sorry pal, this is the Religion & Spirituality forum. If Yahoo had NOT intended people to discuss religion, they would not have made this category! Who do you think you ARE?

Noone is forcing you to answer anything, yet you provide an answer of your own. Kooky.
