The Selective Service was instituted back when the US of A had a draft. This was deemed a "fair" way of calling people up for military service. You are assigned a number, and the number is called. Therefore, alleviating the "name" call up, and giving an even playing board for the rich and poor alike.

We no longer have a draft. The draft will not be reinstated. But, Selective Service is still in the law books. You have to register with the Selective Service to receive FEDERAL aid. This is the just like the law that says if a school does not allow military recruiters on campus, the school is not eligible for federal aid.

IF the draft were ever to be re-instated (not bloody likely), then numbers will be drawn. You will know that this is going to happen, tho, because the media will have a field day with it. *L*

SO, don't worry about the Selective Service. You can register at any Post Office, Army Recruiting Office, or on line at www.ssa.gov

It begins with legislation from Congress directing all eligible men and women in the selected age range to go to their local Selective Service Board to register, undergo a physical and receive a rating. Then these people later get a letter in the mail with their draft card they must have in their possession at all times. Up to now all we have is a Selective Service Act, to register our people so if the President requests a draft and Congress passes said legislation, then we know exactly who to notify, there will be procedures on who is selected, based on the numbers the military request. These people will receive letters to report to the board ASAP and there will receive a more detailed physical. Results are sent forward, everyone waits for DoD to send call-up orders which activate these people and start them on their way to BASIC Training.

Only males have to register for SS.. and in any case the chances of an actual draft happening are about Nil. Despite the nay sayers and comments to the contrary, the military is NOT hurting for bodies overall. In fact, the Navy and Air Force are looking to let people go at this point in time.

Its basially one of those older laws that tie in federal aid to military service as a holdover from Korea and Viet nam.

First, you only have to register if you are a male between the ages of 18-25. You register at the post office. It is easy and is free. Women dont have to register.

Basically, you have to sign up for it when you're 18 and that's it. I seriously doubt we'll ever have a draft...for this war or any other. Maybe if aliens attack. Short of that, very doubtful.

You fight or go to prison. You die and then you don't have to go to prison for not wanting to fight.
