I might have a warrant out on me in another state on account of a bad check but I'm not sure. 4 1/2 years ago I wrote a check while visiting this state and 2 months after I closed my checking account. Then about 1 1/2 yr ago I got a registered letter from the company I had wrote the check to saying that the check had bounced and that if I didn't pay it they were going to put a warrant on me. I never received anything from the bank. Well, shortly after that I moved and the letter got lost in the shuffle. I have no idea if they did file the warrant or how to get into contact with them. And wondering why they waited 3 years to contact me about it. Shortly after I received that letter I was stopped for traffic violation and nothing was said about a warrant but the warrant could have been filed after that. Also I had a MVR done for work about the same time and my license is clean. My question is how do I find out without incriminating myself? And will it show up when I renew my license?

I want to clarify that I closed my account 2 months AFTER I wrote the check. My theory is that they took their time cashing it and it didnt arrive at my bank until after my account was already closed. The check was not bad at the time I wrote it, however.

Contact a lawyer. He can find out. If you don't have the money to pay a lawyer, just call the police or District Attorney in the jurisdiction where you wrote the bad check. Even though you wrote the bad check two months after closing your account you may have used the wrong check mistakenly. It seems likely you knew you were writing a bad check, but that would be difficult to prove. Tell them you had no criminal intent which you must have to be charged with a crime, but say you want to make good on the check to clear your record. You can also call the person you wrote the bad check to and send him a certified check. Another option is to get your credit report and see if there's anything on it. I would recommend paying off the debt. If you don't you may lose a great job because of what some may consider a criminal record or you may wind up in jail after being picked up for a bad tail light. Peace of mind is worth the cost. But, your choice.

Ask any policeman, they'll be very happy to check it out. And if there is warrent, any time ypu have a traffic stop or any other police contact it'll show up. sometimes it takes a while though.
