It's actually quite surprising that many people wonder about the same things. Also, sometimes it's good to post a situation and get different opinions on the same issue. It gives you a look from the outside looking in

Well, MsBluebells, it's like this: I've only been on answers for a couple of weeks. Answers is like a planet-wide Help Desk for general help on any topic. As a teacher, I enjoy assisting people and answering questions, so that's one reason for being here.
One drawback that I have noticed is that people keep asking the same question. Maybe Yahoo should do a check on a question before putting it into the open slot and display related answers (this would require a database search with a little intelligence added). If there were prior answers, people could be invited to amend or amplify, but not only answer.
Another thing I notice is that many people seem to be intent only on getting their two points and not really in answering the question. Of course, some questions by their nature invite sarcasm or humor, but not all.
Maybe there should be a division of questions into kinds, like opinion questions and factual questions, then the opinion questions would be a sort of dialog, while the factual questions would be a straight yes, no, maybe. Irrelevant answers to factual questions should, perhaps, get a minus 5 points, and off-topic answers for opinion questions should get minus 10 (this maybe should be done now to reduce the number of people just in it for the two points).

I guess its a point thing, even though they dont mean a thing, and I look out for something I might know the exact answer to.And it is fun to find a gem of a question, and read all the answers to it.It is also cool to post a really snappy answer of your own, also the few questions I asked resulted in direct answers.case in point:one of my first questions was how to replace a dead turn signal light in my truck, someone here posted me a link that described exactly how to do it,I bought the 2 dollar bulb and installed it,according to the info in the link.I later found out it would have cost $40 to have it done at the car dealer.

Perhaps it's boredom, but I believe people actually want to help and this makes them feel helpful. When they are rewarded by giving a best answer, well, that just makes them feel as though they are smarter than they believed themselves to be. And who doesn't want confirmation of how intellectual they are or aren't for that matter. Yahoo answers is also a way for bored people to meet other bored people!

I asked a question, and got very few constuctive answers. I think the forum needs more constructive people and since I am injured and can not work. I want to help others.

A good opportunity to reach out to people who may be able to do better with answers than being without it.
Yahoo answers also gives out a message of re-assurance that "You are not alone, we are with you when you need us"!

I have gotten some really good answers to questions I have asked, and I guess I answer because I can voice and opinion or hope to help someone at times.
