I think you can be guided by his thirst, making sure water is always available and as appealing as possible. If he is really resistant to water EVERY time, you could dilute juice 50-50 with water maybe 2 times a day and stick to that limit. Juice will provide hydration, although of course water is ideal. I tried to teach my daughter juice and sweet drinks are for taste, water is for thirst.

don't give him gatoraide, it is not formulated for children active or not. give him the juice, just try watering it down, I give my son 1 oz juice to 3 oz water most times. my son will not drink straight water. I would say get as much into him as you can without getting too much and making him not want to eat. My son is 20 months old so I know where you are at with that. My son doesn't give me problems with his milk though, but what you could try with that is to give him the same amount of milk a day as when you are doing regularly but try giving him his milk just in the morning and evening. If he is refusing his milk just during the day it may be the heat, it curdles very shortly after it gets to their stomach so that may be turning him off of milk right now.
There is also pediatric formulated drinks you could give him that are like juice, I think one is pedialyte, in liquid or frozen form, that will help him from getting dehydrated and is formulated for his small body unlike gatoraide or poweraide. Leave those to the older kids and adults please.

Good luck

I have the same problem with my five year old and here is what I have found that works for her to get her to drink water without her knowing that she is drinking water. First Capri Sun is now making a flavored water it has I believe 30 calories in it and not that much sugar in it and it comes in 3 different flavors so that is one choice, the second choice is to get the Kool Aid drop ins they are meant to go one per 8 ounce bottle of water but I put one per 16 ounce of water it gives her just enough of flavor, it is the sugar free kind so I am not giving her tons of sugar, but she is happy and she gets to shake it up which is a plus. The last choice you have is Christal Lite you can either go the pre measured packs that go in a water bottle or you can make a pitcher, but there is no calories or anything else in it so it is just like drinking water but it has the flavor (I drink it all the time because it counts as part of the eight glasses of water a day) but they have all different flavors and my daughter loves them so she does not mind drinking them either and I don't feel bad because it is the same as drinking water. Try checking these out they have helped me out a ton. Good luck

try watering down his juices gradually , or how about making some watery iceblocks , im not sure how much a toddler should drink but at least a litre I'd say.If he's thirsty enough he'll drink water.. and playing with the hose, i bet he'd end up drinking a fair bit of water..lol DON"T give him gatorade or any sport drink,it'snot good for kids at all. It's a big con.

My son wants to do everything we do so every time I get a drink ask him if he wants a drink and hand him his cup. This is how we got him to drink from a sippy and I only put water in it. At first he played with it - that is normal. Now he loves water and refuses to drink anything else. So we are having the opposite problem you are and are having to use the same method to get him used to milk. So my suggestion is to give him the cup a lot, expect him to play with it until he gets used to the taste, and model the behavior you want him to emulate by drinking a glass of water with him. Eventually he'll get it - especially if it is all you offer (only give milk at meals, and water the rest of the time).

Give him as much water as he will drink. Pedialyte ( something likethat) is good too. If you give him juice cut it sometimes with water.

My little one does not like to drink water either with this one exception. She will drink water any time we offer it to her as long as it is in one of those sports bottles the ones witht the pull up snap down tops and the little hole wthwater comes out of. We do not know why but that is about the only way she will drink water but she will drink pleanty of it as long as it is in that kind of bottle. Babies need water especially when it is hot because they dehydrate easily. My darling is 18 months old and guess who buys a lot of bottled water. Good Luck

I would provide very diluted juice to fool him. Basically just water with a bit of colouring. Do it gradually though. If he's able to, keep it in the fridge & tell him big kids get their own drinks. Just watch the volume.

You should ask your pediatrician. If he doesn't drink enough water, you could consider diluting juice with water, so he doesn't get too many empty calories, but gets enough liquid so he doesnt get dehydrated.
