A social worker is someone who is supposed to be empathetic towards people, and to be able to keep an open mind about different ways of dealing with issues. Just because your views may be "spare the rod, spoil the child" someone with a different background, nationality, religion or any other reason to have a different view may not feel the way you do. You can't force people to accept your view, but you try to help these people out by offering different suggestions of dealing with things in a nice way while being empathetic towards their views. You don't talk to them forcefully no matter how long you've been in the profession, on your own correct views of how the situation should have been handled. You guide people by just giving ideas, but you never talk forcefully. you sometimes see situations you're angry about, but you never lose your cool. you don't have to work for the government, but most do. If you've been in a situation where you try to force someone towards your views or lose your cool in situations that may anger you it may not be the field for you. If you find helping people without judging them a joy then it's the field for you. KEEP AN OPEN MIND AT ALL TIMES, but when these things anger you don't take it out on others try to seek help, because if you don't you'll become bitter like one social worker that i've met. she doesn't have any compassion for people she became judgemental, and she became close minded. You can't do that at all. Yes some children can turn around with "chats", but you can't change everyone's views towards your own views. Good luck in finding your career.

Social workers have a wide range of specialties form schools to hospitals to emergency situations. My wife is a social worker and has worked for a police department for a couple of yrs in the past to de-escalate and negotiate with dangerous people who have intent to harm others to family gang matters to marriage counciling to drug abusers to psychotics in a psychiatric hospital. They have a wide range of different roles. ie consultation of those suffering from the Katrina disaster, good luck if you choose the path. Select one direction and build on experience in the field . You will in some states be required to become licensed and have on-going training . Seminars are usually paid for by your employer some others have a small fee.
Some positions earn litttle to 70 k per year depends on your involvement.
