I don't want her watching television too much, so I have colored with her. I have also played outside, and let her help me with my jewelry making and I read to her often.

Check your local library to see if they have story times or other kid events going on, go to a playground at a park, local zoo, if you are willling to spend a little a board game like candy land can be fun (check a used book store or thrift shops for inexpensive toys, games, books, summer school workbooks, and audiobooks), do a role-playing game, plant a garden, collect things from nature while learning something new about each one.(type of flowers, unique rocks..etc..), have themes for certain days to learn about a country or culture, colors, animals, music... by decorating, dressing, cooking, or learning a part of that language, play online games, set up a lemonade stand.

I also have a few resources you can use. Good luck and have fun!

if you have cement driveway or sidewalk. How about sidewalk chalk drawings. Can be "erased" in the evening with water and start over again next day! Bubbles in a jar. Nature walk look for red flowers or blue. Count cats or dogs or airplanes. How many time you can spin on the lawn before you tip over and laugh. Her not you! Catch butterfly's or count them. Look for lizards or spiders. Have a squirt gun contest to see who can knock over a paper cup from a distance. Buy a easy book of scienceexperiments for young children and help her with that. Let her play dress up with you old costume jewlery and clothes. Have a tea party with her guests! You Bring a pretend friend also. Give her a name. See if she follows suit>

Playdough!!! All kids love playdough. And she'll love it even more if you make it together.
Here is a great home-made recipe.

You need
~ 3 cups flour
~ 1/2 cup salt
~ 2 packages Kool-Aid
~ 2 cups freshly boiled water
~ 3 tablespoons veg. oil

Steps:
1. Stir dry ingredients together.
2. Add boiled water. DO NOT MIX YET!
3. Add oil an now mix.
4. Knead until well blended.
5. Store in air tight containers.

This is great fun with a child your grand daughter's age. And it keeps much better then store bought playdough! Have fun!

You're doing fine. Baking cookies once in a while, some games like checkers, connect 4, find a word or word seek are good. Outings to museum, park, art show, swimming are excellent, and Treasure Hunt--where you hide 3 or 4 items and give clues to follow-- is a great standby. You might also consider a foreign language tape course to use and learn together.

There are some wonderful answers here! I'd add going to the public library. The ones near us have story time in the evening and sometimes have activities to match the books. It keeps them interested in reading, too. Best of luck.

Arts and crafts are your best bet. But don’t stick to one topic at first and if you buy a project kit chose one at least 3-4 years older than her.

It sounds like you're already on the right track. Most girls that age love doing arts and crafts.
