For home/yard: Borax (found in laundry section of grocery store)
For pet: highly recommend using a vet-supplied topical flea prevention (ex. Advantage, Frontline, Rovolution). These are very effective and safe, whereas most other products are not and can cause health problems. If you are totally against using a topical, I have known a holistic vet to use garlic in the pet's food. A small!!!! amount of garlic (powder form). Ask your veterinary staff for more advice.

Go to the woods and try to find you some merckle bush (I have no idea how that's spelled, but that's how it sounds)). Then just cut off some small leafy branches, and drop them all over your house. Fleas can't stand this stuff, and you will not have a problem with fleas in your house or on your pets, gauranteed.

Just bear in mind that some things that are toxic to fleas are also toxic to cats and dogs (eg. teatree oil).
Why not settle for a proven remedy like frontline or advantage, at least you know the concentration of these products and they are pet safe.

What you can do is go to wal-mart in the vitamin section. There will be this liquid called Tea Tree Oil......it is pretty potent so also get a spray bottle and some rubbing alcohol........when you get home pour just a little of the tea tree oil in the bottle then pour about a cup of rubbing alcohol in it........go ahead and fill the rest of the way with water..............the concoction will not mix entirely so each time you administar the spray give the bottle a good brisk shaking. it will kill the fleas and it smells good too..........................also it feels good on your own skin when you have mosquito bites and also repels them..................
