We have a year old germain shepard and we don't have a yard but we take him for walks everyday and play fetch with him but sometimes when we let him off the lead to do his bussiness if it's dark he will wander off, we try to call him back but he dosen't listen so we drive around trying to look for him and with no success.
About an hour later he comes back but what concerns me is he keeps vomiting, he goes and eats anything from fox or cat poo to old moldy anything that smells realll bad, why dose he do this and how can I stop it before he eats something that could kill him,

Keeping him onlead is not cruel at all, it is for his own safety.

Another thing to think about is what if he runs after another dog and gets in a fight? In some places, if he were to kill someone elses dog he will be put down.

I absolutely hate it when people don't confine their dog and they come charging at me and mine when we are out walking. Even if his intentions are not to fight that does not mean my dogs feel the same. Please leash your dog, it is the responsible thing to do.

Better to be mean to him then have him die from an unknown toxin or get hit by a car.
In all honesty, I have a dog that I can't trust so I don't. I leash walk him everyday, he never runs (except inside the house) and he is perfectly happy.
There are a couple of things you could try like a closed in yard or an electric fence (available at pet stores).
If you are truely wanting to see him run, take him to a tennis court and let him go there for an hour or so.

If you don't have a yard - what are you doing with such a large dog?

Easy solution? Be a responsible parent and keep him on the leash. Even if he listens to your commands, you may not call him before he eats rat poison or runs in front of a car.

Shock collars? How cruel. These are illegal in parts of the country and the world. I would never punish/injure my dog or child by sending electricity charging through their body.

Either find a way to potty him on the leash or figure out a way to have him potty in the house on puppy pads. If this isn't possible, you really do run the risk of having a serious issue with your dog. I hope you are able to find a solution. Good luck to you. : )

The problem is not that he's eating these things it is that he is not obeying your commands to return. You have two options, one is to not let him off the lead. Walk him around, he will eventually do his business. Another is to train him to "come". I have a german shepard puppy (6 months old) and we take her out in the country and just let her run around, but when we head to the car she is right with us. You can train your dog to come by putting him on a lead in a confined area, holding a kibble and telling him to come. If he does, give him the kibble and lots and lots of praise. If he does not, grab the lead and give it a firm but gentle tug. Keep doing this until he will come without the kibble, it may take a little or a long time. We have also clearly taught our dog the meaning of "no!", so if she is off her lead and starts wandering off, we just say "no!" and she will circle back closer to us.

The main thing to avoid is punishing your dog when it returns home - by doing this you are telling him that when he comes to you, he is in trouble. So whenever he come to you, praise, praise, praise. Let him know that coming is a very good thing.

It's irresponsible on your part to keep letting him off the leash. He could very easily lick antifreeze on someone's driveway. Without immediate medical attention, that would kill him. He also could be eating a diseased animals feces. Really, why would you let him off the leash if you know he runs off?

Are you stupid? Keep him on a leash. Seems like that will stop the whole problem. Dumb@ss
Better yet, give him to someone who will take better care of him.

big dogs need a yard so they can run. It is cruel to keep him hemmed up in an apartment or what ever you have. At least take him to a park or field where he can get the exercise he needs.

If he does not have a reliable recall (coming when you call him) do not let him off the leash. It is not safe.

I breed german shepherds and have invested in a shock collar. I got a good one with 8 levels b/c I don't want to hurt them-just get their attention. If you aren't going to breed him, ask a vet about fixing him.
