It is because the girls that they do know are girls that they have interest in, but are only friends with because the girls are not interested in them like that; or vice-versa. People are only friends with the opposite sex if one of the parties is interested and the other is not, but accepts friendship so as not to cut the other peson down. The guys are just trying to look for someone to reciprocate their interest.

because if they get turned down, the rejection wont bother them as much as getting turned down by a girl they know.
