Save those heels! Wait for them to go hard, rub them with raw garlic, salt & pepper them, cube them up and bake them off to make yummy croutons!

I grew up leaving the heel pieces until the end of the loaf because my dad thought it kept the loaf from drying out.... So, that's what I do lol. ALSO, I think the heels make the BEST peanut butter and jellie sandwhiches. Mostly because I like a lot of filling, and the thicker bread keeps it all in place...

I cringe when I read about people throwing them out.... what a waste... =(

I save them. For some weird reason I believe that the heel "protects" the surface on the other slices, so it doesn't become stale. Then when there are no more "real" slices, I sometimes eat the heels. But most of the time , I'll throw them away.

I toss both heels of bread, unless it's yummy homemade or crusty artisan bread, then I toast it and slather it with butter.
