Give the dogs a brewer's yeast tablet daily. Fleas don't like the taste of their blood . Don't know about cats. Use the tubes of flea killer from the pet department of stores or pet stores to dot on cat's or dogs back, down their spine.
Note, that many better dry dog foods contain brewers yeast.
Easy to rid the yard of fleas. Buy a bag of fertilizer with insect killer and put it out before a rain. Buy a "Ortho" sprayer and malathion , about $10 a quart, (walmart, lowe's or home depot) use two or three ounces in sprayer with water and go over yard about once a month right before flea season begins in the spring.

go to your local hardware store like Lowe's and get lime to put on your yard. you put it on with a spreader and then take the garden hose and wet down your yard and wait till the next day to let your animals out on it. this won't do away with all of them but will help cut down on them some. i also use frontline on my animals to help with fleas, just check with your vet to get that.

be careful with sprays, if the cats eat the grass it is sprayed, they can get deathly sick
