The people who need spell check don't care about their spelling. Lots of Americans can spell. Unfortunately, it seems that most of those who can't spell like to post on Yahoo Answers!
I am confused about the criticisms of the school system. First of all, charter school are also public schools. Secondly, I don't know any teachers (and I am an educator) who do not teach spelling. I don't think the system is the problem as much as the parents. Children who read at home and who have parents who speak correct English will usually spell well.

Today's educational system has too much politics of allowing kids to pass without learning anything so they and theirs won't feel "disenfranchised" or picked upon. Also, the electronics of today have slowed down peoples' desire to think for themselves, so, there goes education. I don't use Spell Check because I did well in the Spelling Bee program way back when, and I learned a pattern to spelling, and so I don't need any modern day "electronic brain" to do my thinking, or spelling, for me. God Bless you.

Ignorance
Laziness
I have found that Public School Teachers are LAZY. They don't practice any type of writing in school. They just do the BASICS and let everything else go.
My 11 yr old son has a horrible handwriting and spells even worse. Due to his years in Public School.
We have moved all 3 of our children to Charter Schools. There the teachers ACTUALLY CARE about handwriting and spelling.

how easily everyone points the finger at teachers. its already been said but it could never be said enough. parents have far more responsibility in the education of their children than teachers. teachers see students for hours a day, for a partial year. if something has failed in your child so that he/she can't read, write, do math then the the failure has been that of the parent. if you recognize a problem existing in your child is it YOUR responsibility to deal with it. teachers deal on a shallow level with every child. they are meant to merely fill the gaps of the foundation that a parent builds. if the foundation does not exist there is little time and resource for the teacher to deal with the situation. i'm sorry that there are so many idiot americans who aren't literate and resourceful. but let's be realistic and understand that the idiocy starts far sooner than school does.
pointing the finger at teachers does little to help. how about learning about your local classrooms and finding out what is needed to help teachers come closer to accomplishing their educational goals.
i do my job as a parent AND a teacher and i'm not talking about my job. if my son fails to learn math and literature *I* am the one who must live with the repercussions. if your child's teacher has impacted your child's progress so greatly that he/she can't read, spell, count then perhaps you should evaluate how little impact you have had on that child.

Now don't blame spell check... Even this passed through. What it takes is time and effort to personally check your work and make it your own. It is the person, not the teacher who is at fault.

Teaching jobs don't pay sh**, so why should teachers work harder? NO.. Really, I think it's the PARENTS fault. Teachers help children learn. Parents need to be more involved.
