I'm not sure if you can catch viruses from Windows users, however a quick search turned up an interesting page talking about anti-virus solutions for Mac OS. One of them is ClamAV, an open source Anti-Virus program (also available for Linux) that is free, and it seems pretty good according to this site. It also recommends Sophos, but strongly recommends against Norton and Virex.

Your friend is crazy. You can't catch a Windows virus on a Mac. You really don't need anti virus protection with a Mac, unless you're really paranoid and you do stupid things, like open e-mail attachments from people you don't know, or hanging out on porn sites and downloading files from file sharing networks. Even with all of that, the chances of actually getting a Mac virus are very slim.
