I think you may have misheard. Cancer affects systems or organs of the body - I'm not sure that humans have any part of their body called "pet".
But, PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans are used to help locate cancers - they are machines, not cancer.

I came up dry for a kind of cancer that was not veterinary in nature with this. The one thing that I did find was about what used to be called PETT (positron emission tracking tomography) It is a way of looking at the body using a special radioactive dye to see what parts are getting the blood flow at the moment. The scanning can take place over 1000 times a second to watch things like thoughts and sights be processed. It is marvellous at getting a picture of cancers in the brain because it shows places that XRay, Cat Scan and MRI don't show too clearly.

Does PET stand for something. There is no such thing as pet cancer unless your pet (dog,cat) has cancer. There is test called a PET scan that can detect cancers in people. Mabe she had a PET scan done to see if she had cancer.

P.E.T. ?
my nephew had this .. he had brain tumors and tumors on his back .. im not sure if you mean pet or P.E.T. ( intials for a very long word)
cancer is nothing to play with, he battled for 3 years and died at the age of 9 ( mothers day weekend 2003)
