Even though I still eat some good carbs. Because when ever I don't watch my carbs, I tend to want to over eat. Also because when I eat foods higher in protein & lower in carbs..I don't feel as bloated.

Low carb is better than no carb. A no carb diet sends your body into ketosis and thats never a good thing. You force your body to run on fat instead of carbs and the body isnt meant to do that. Your back will hurt because your kidneys are in overdrive trying to filter out all the stuff in fat that your body doesnt need. My anatomy proffesor said that eating no carbs and making your body run on fat alone is like putting diesel gasoline into a regular car... it'll run but not as efficiently and with a lot more byproduct.

Ditto on Mccarthy (sp) Ketosis is very bad! But If you want a good doctor recommended low carb diet try the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet. Your still allowed to eat carbs, nothing is off limits, its all in how you eat it! I have ZERO discipline when it comes to food and I am able to stick to it and loose weight! Plus I feel good and have energy throughout the day. Do a google search for it, or I got their book at the library.

The secret to losing weight and fat is that there isn't any secret. It's all about two things. 1. Eating fewer calories than you use. 2. Increasing the exercise/work that your muscles are doing. The first part means you will lose weight slowly but healthily. The second part means you will look better, more toned and fit, when you get to your desired weight. Aim for a pound a week. Pay no attention to the trainer in the gym when he offers you advice on diet.

Here is what you need to do, if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. Eat 6 small meals a day about every 4 hours. Here what that will do for you, your metabolism will increase (i.e. Loose weight) and you will have more engry. If you go on a diet and eat less, your metabolism will slow down and store to fat. That is why diets dont work. Only the size of your fist, carbs (examples:baked potato, pasta, oatmeal, beans, corn, melon, apples, fat free yogurt, whole wheat breads)in one and protien (examples:chicken breast, swordfish, shrimp, turkey breast) in the other. You can also eat vegetables and salads with any meal, they dont have none or little fat). 30min cardo exercise every day. Any of these(examples: walking, jogging, swimming, running, biking, ect), Monday cardo, tues upper body (arms: curls, tricep extensions, pull ups, front press)(abdominals: leg pull crunch, leg raises), (chest: bench press, butterfly, pullover)(shoulders: front press, arm pullover, cross county skier machine)(back:seated row, lat pull downs, back extension)(YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IN ONE DAY, mix it up) wed cardo, thurs lower body (legs: leg pull, leg press, squats, lounges) fri cardo, sat upper. Sunday eat anything you want and dont exercising, you do this on sunday so your body doesnt go into starvation mode. YOU NEED TO TAKE SUNDAY OFF. If you stilck with this you will have a great body. also drink aleast 8oz of water daily! Stay away from Mcdonals, Wendys, ect because there is nothing good for you on the menu's even the salads are bad (beaon bits, cheeze, dressing, ect) Good Luck :)

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.

And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.

Everything should be in moderation. You can control refined carbs in your diet without too many bad repercussions. But, eliminating fruit, veggies, legumes, and other complex carbs can create some problems.

In answering this question, I am going to break my answer into a few sections:

1. Determine why you want to low carb.
2. Why low carb is not bad for you.
3. Why some of the other answers are wrong or inaccurate.
4. Further suggested reading.

1. Determine why you want to low carb.

If your purpose is to lose 10 or 15 pounds, reducing your carb intake will lower your weight just as following other weight loss plans like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig or any other change in your eating habits that reduce your calorie intake. If the purpose of your "diet" is to temporarily change your eating habits until you reach your goal weight and then going back to your old eating habits, none of the eating plans will keep the weight off for good. That is why you need to think about a life-long change in those eating habits and not just a temporary change.

If you are someone who is pre-diabetic or diabetic, or if you work too many hours or do not exercise, then a low carb lifestyle change will not be bad for you and will in fact be very good for you. There is 20 plus years of scientific evidence that show a reduced carb lifestyle is health and does not cause any ill effects that are sometimes (inaccurately) attributed to a low carb lifestyle.

Incidence of diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. People do not watch their intake of sugar, bleached white flour, potatoes, and processed foods. All of these items along with a reduction in exercise levels contributes to an obese America with rising diabetes and heart disease. There are many studies that show that eliminating these high-carb, starches and sugars can reduce body weight, lower the chances of diabetes and heart disease, and increase life expectancy.

2. Why low carb is not bad for you

Someone following a low carb plan is never instructed to eat only fatty items nor are they told to never have fruits, vegetables, or fiber ever again. In the Induction phase of Dr. Atkins' plan, he instructed people to reduce their carb count to 20 grams per day, have leafy green vegetables, good protein sources like lean meats, fish, eggs, and dairy and TEMPORARILY not have fruit with a high carb count. Then as the person gets used to their new eating style, they start to add back some healthy carbs (more fruit, vegetables, fiber) but to still avoid starches and sugars.

From the Wikipedia entry for the Atkins Nutritional Approach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkins_Nutritional_Approach): The Atkins diet involves restriction of the intake of carbohydrates in order to switch the body's metabolism from burning glucose to burning stored fat. This process (called lipolysis) begins when the body enters the state of ketosis as a consequence of running out of carbohydrates to burn.

There has been so much negative and inaccurate information published about low carb and Dr. Atkins' suggestions that unless you have read the books and studied the science behind the plan, you will not understand it. One of the most inaccurate statements about low carb is that your cholesterol levels skyrocket. Not only is that statement incorrect but there are multiple studies and examples that low carbers actually reduce their cholesterol levels.

3. Why some of the other answers are wrong or inaccurate.

First, the concept of "Everything should be in moderation" is wrong. Ingredients like sugar and high fructose corn syrup have no positive nutritional value and should not be part of anyone's lifestyle. There are both good fats and bad fats and there should be no intake of unhealthy fats.

There is no diet plan that suggests "no carbs". Never was, never will be. The whole science behind "low carb" is that your body first burns carbohydrates and then body fat for energy. Once your body is done burning the carbohydrates in your body for energy, it then turns to body fat.

Ketosis is not bad for you as wrongly stated in a previous answer. Ketosis is the body burning stored fat for energy. It is wrongly confused with ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a medical condition usually caused by diabetes and accompanied by dehydration, hyperglycemia, ketonuria and increased levels of glucagon. IT HAS NO RELATION TO KETOSIS (except it SOUNDS similar).

The third person who responded said "I did the low carb diet before , u have to have 0 carbs the first 3 days , thats how long it take for carbs to exit your body then gradually add some carbs just watch out for those hidden sugars some stuff hasay there sugar free but they add a hidden sweetner thats just as bad as sugar !" - Besides not being able to spell, once again, it is never suggested to have zero carbs, you do not reduce your carbs for only 3 days, it is for 14 days, and sugar free products do not have a hidden sugar, I have never heard a statement that wrong before. Sugar free means WITHOUT SUGAR.
