You may use your laptop on airplanes during times other than takeoff or landing. Be sure to listen or watch for stewardess or video announcements that the use of electronic devices is permitted. The only wireless Internet services currently available on airplanes is Connexion by Boeing (link below). Otherwise, you must use a dialup connection on Verizon Airfone (second link), which costs as much as $4.00 a minute. Verizon Airfone is being phased out (third link), however, in favor of a new wireless offering coming soon.

Omar stated above that the Verizon Airfone is being phased out. In addition, as of early this week, Boeing announced that it was no longer interested in continuing with the Connexion service. This came due to a lack of financing since financially-strapped US airlines originally backing the program cancelled their orders and are now looking into different options.

None of the US flag carriers offer internet access in-flight at present. There are plans to offer it in the future, once technical and billing issues are worked out.
I believe that Lufthansa does in Europe, as do a number of Asian airlines. Pricing is about $28.00 for the duration of the flight and any connections within 24 hours.

Yes...you can use your laptop. I have flown many times in the past year, and lots of people are using their laptops on the airplane. You must turn in off upon take-off. Once you climb above 10,000 feet, the captain (or flight attendant) will make an announcement that you can turn on your computers if you'd like. Then, right before you are landing, he will ask you to turn them off.
