If it's best for the dog, use a collar.

Prevent Dog From Licking Wound

I have just recently had to solve this problem myself. I have a Boston Terrier who lick a small wound and turned it in to a hot spot. You will want to have the area checked by a vet to make sure that the dog hasn't irritated it into an infection. If it is infected it may need antibiotics. We ended up putting a medicated powder on the wound and wrapped it for two days. (wound on the foot) After the 48 hrs of it being wrapped we had to put cortizone cream on it and just keep and eye on him and give him a verbal correction when he would start licking fortunately he can always distracted by the ball. We did not end up needing a collar. I also must say that while his foot was wrap we sprayed the wrap with apple bitter spray every time we left the house and left him unsupervised.

Why don't you want to use an e-collar? My dog just wore one for a week and loved it. I convinced her that is was "special jewelry" only for good girls. She actually got mad when I tried to take it off. She would try to get away when I cleaned and dressed her wound, but she came right up to me and stood quietly while I put her collar on. Give your dog lots of treats and lots of affection while she is wearing the collar. It will make her feel better about wearing it. The wound will heal much faster if your dog is not constantly licking it.

It can be done, but this is the way the dog keeps the wound clean. It is natural for a dog to lick their wounds. If the wound is not healing, try wrapping it. You can buy co-ban it is like a self-adhesive ace bandage, make sure you use a non-stick pad under it with an antibiotic ointment, preferably triple antibiotic. You will need to check the bandage frequently, because the dog will want to get to the wound and clean it. This should only be done if the wound is not healing on its own. You can get co-ban at Wal-Mart in the pharmacy, or you can get it at a tack and feed store.

I am not sure that you can. That is why they make the cones. I actually heard that it is good for dogs to lick wounds. I hear it helps them heal faster.
Good Luck.
If you are that concerned about the licking, ask your vet. Just call them, they should be able to recommend something.

the cone collors are actually one of the best things to use but if you feel strongly about not useing one then you could also use a seditive. a seditive will help the dog calm and not feel like they constantly need to lick thier wound. another thing that helps is if you take a luke warm washcloth that was dipped in lukewarm water. if you gently place it on the wound it can help the dog feel the same relief of licking without the complications.

You should definitely use one of those collars. It will bug your dog for a while, but it is the best for him. If you just let him lick the wound, it will get infected.

It is actually good for a dog to lick its wounds. I have heard that dogs have a special antibiotic in their salava that helps wounds heal faster and that is why they lick on them.

Talk to your vet about an antiseptic cream or spray that tastes bad, they do make such a thing! and don't listen to the people that say its good for him to lick it. It's good to an extent, but most pets will lick it raw, thats why your vet recommends an E-collar.
