You can't give your whole liver, but you can give a part.
The liver is so cool; it can regenerate.
There would be pain from the operation, but not for the rest of your life.

yes i would, but it is not the whole liver that would be taken from me to give to my family member. You cannot survive without a liver. The doctors take a portion of the donors healthy liver, I imagine they take a portion of the bad liver out and graft a portion of the healthy liver onto it. Your liver will regenerate and function normally. You should not have daily pain for the rest of your life.

I know that people have their time "to go" but, if I could save someone I love, I think I could live with the pain of no liver easier than the pain of life without them-
even if they still die before me-
every second counts when it comes to family and love and friends and caring and all the good things in life, a liver shouldn't make you show love more than it could if you just loved and cared everyday...

First of all, you can't transplant the whole liver. You can give part of it, but not the whole thing. Human body cannot live without it's main filtration system, so therefore, you would eventually die & not be feeling any pain anyway. I guess it would depend on whether or not you wanted to die at that particular point in your life, or would you rather let the other person live?

I went through something similar, but, thankfully it didn't come to that extreme. My mom was told that she needed a liver txplnt, me and my 3 brothers were tested for matches, I matched. It was the absolute hardest decision to make, but I decided to go through with it even though my mom was an alcoholic. (recovering, but.....) About 3 wks before everything was supposed to go down, when another of the doctors did a second biopsy he discovered that something (I don't know what) was misread and she didn't need a txplnt.
I would totally do it again. I would have gone through with it. It's SUCH a personal decision and the absolute hardest. I say go with your gut. If you feel right about it, go for it. If it makes you feel quesy (not the surgery) don't. There is no right or wrong answer!

You cn't live without a liver. You would have to be willing to trade you life for theirs. I guess if I had a child or a wife I could possibly consider it, but then of course it would have to be a match. Kidney, no problem- liver, I really don't know.

No- it's sad that my family member is suffering, but there's no reason for me to sacrifice my life for something that might not work anyways (the liver may be rejected).

Depends. On the family member and the reason why their liver was screwed. If it was self inflected (alcoholism) ...I would not. No matter which member.

This is a good question because it makes people think about it.
I would have a hard time deciding though
