It depends on the owner My friend has 3 girl masstiffs and they are great he breeds them as well but he did tell me if you are scared of them or dont think you can handle them don't get one. Example: 1 day one of his girls decided to nip him he wacked her with a stick she came back for another go cause she thought it was fun ( they are a tough breed and dont feel alot unless its hard) as he said they are thick dogs .

I currently own my first Mastiff, female, 15 months old. She is not your typical "mellow" Mastiff. She would be a dominant female if she lived in a "pack of dogs". However, we do have 2 Rotties also. But, my husband and I are the pack leaders in our home. Even though this Mastiff has dominant tendencies, she does not use them on us. She will try with the female Rottie, but we are there to take the upper-hand if needed. On the whole she is of course more quiet then let's say a bouncy Rat-Terrirer. ;) I love those dogs too. As I tell everyone weather you have a Chi, Pom, Rat Terrier, Mastiff, or Dane, etc, you must get your dog out there and socialize him, get him in puppy class, or even big dog class. Obedience is always #1. And, walking; every dog in the world weather tiny or HUGE, should be walked at least 30 mins a day. This not only helps your dog releive some pent up energy, but it will bring you and your dog closer, and you will have a chance to enjoy his company one on one. No, letting your dog out in the yard to run or chase a ball is not the samething. Walking should be done in addition to play time.
My Mastiff was 5 months old when I got her; she had no basic training at all. The guy I got her from was going to use her as a show dog. She was already a handful at this age not having any manners. She's 15 months now, and does all the basic commands, sometimes a little slower than I would like, but she's coming along. Also, she weighs 110 lbs. She is very strong. I'm not as strong as I use to be. When I walk her and my 120 lb male Rottie, they MUST listen to me, and walk at the pace I am comfortable walking. I made a mistake once by not asking them to listen, and I literally dove into the pavement. I was lucky I did not need knee surgery. I will never do that again. Always your dog must be undercontrol.
They are indeed wonderful pets.

Any mastiff is a great dog to have as a companion. as long as it's trained. I have a 12y/o old that gets alone great with ever body even young children. But as some one said - socialize him/her early, they tend to be very Territorial at home alone....But friendly nonetheless.

They are great pets. They tend to be very laid back and mellow. Just be sure to socialize them very well they Can be very difficult to handle if not socialized properly. Mastiffs are one of my favorite breeds.

They are amazing as pets. I almost got one, but then I found a Saint Bernard up for adoption at a shelter. They are so lovable.

I've seen one rip someone to pieces and have to go through 6 hours of surgery and have drain tubes put in their back from one.
But if you like them, good luck.
